Random thing I have no memory of writing, but my history says I did at 3am:

Jacob was tired. That fact was plain and obvious, but he could not put a finger on what exactly  made him tired. Jacob was tired of many things. He was tired of the constant aching of his legs from endless walking, the bruises on his knuckles and arms from fighting, the food (or rather lack of), or maybe it was just listening to Ellie's constant rambling. All Jacob knew is that he was simply tired, and the padded shelf he called a bed was offering little comfort. He knew eventually exhaustion and fatigue would take control, and he would slip into darkness, but now did not seem to be the time.

"Something's coming!" Ryan's yell rang through their little home, warning the group of an oncoming threat. Jacob grabbed the large knife from under his pillow, and bat from beside his bed, and rushed out to help the others defend their current territory.

A figure approached from the distance, staggering across the broken landscape. It hadn't always been like that, Jacob could still remember the days when the land had once been covered in beautiful grass, with the sun constantly shining down upon flowers that dotted the fields. Now it was just dead soil, and large rocks that dotted the flat region, it's been like that ever since the incident.

The figure now stood about a 30 feet away, and more details became apparent. It had dark hair that had clearly not been groomed in a while. The figures clothing was far to big for it, and it walked with an evident limp, favoring the left leg over the right.

Jacob got into a fighting stance and slid his knife into its sheath while raising the bat. He saw Ryan do the same, as Ellie, Clair, and Jane exited the building, weapons in hand. Ryan attempted to get them to go back inside, saying that him and Jacob could handle it, but they refused. Ever since Dash disappeared, they had been quite protective of the youngest two. The girls readied their weapons, Ellie with her crossbow, Claire with her hockey stick, and Jane with her pistols.

The figure was now only fifteen feet away and Jane fired a warning shot six inches away from the figure's foot. "That was your warning, now tell us who you are, what you want, and why you've come this far into the badlands." Jane had shouted this in her best possible drill sergeant voice, that could easily make any stranger shake in their boots.

The figure did not respond, but stopped walking. Now that the figure was closer you could see more details about it. It was clearly human, and looked to be wearing-

"Is that Dash's jacket?" Ryan said this in whisper, but we had all heard it. The jacket did look oddly familiar. The light blue denim design was the same, and you could see the faint outline of the stitched word on the jacket's left breast pocket.

Ellie stopped that thought "Forget the jacket, is that Dash?"

The figure smiled in response and took a few steps forward, all of us to stunned to stop him. "Am I allowed to ask for a hug or will you shoot me?"

Jane dropped her weapon and raced forward, talking him in a hug. "We might shoot you for disappearing for so long," She said this in a joking manner, but you could tell she was serious, "Where have you been any way?" She climbed off him and helped him to his feet.

"Well it's," he shifted on between his feat, clearly nervous,"It's a long story."

"Well, come inside then, we have plenty of time," Ryan offered with a smile, leaving no room for an argument.

In a few minutes Jacob had tea ready, and was able to find some leftover goods for the occasion.  He found the others in the 'living area', or rather some logs and tires to it on with a fire pit in the middle, witch Ryan had managed to light a rather large sized fire in.

Jacob took his seat between Ryan and Ellie and poured himself a cut of tea before passing around cups and then the kettle. After a few short minutes, Everyone in the room was drinking tea in silence. Ellie, for one hated silence, she has since the incident. But the tension in the room was thick enough to require a saw to cut, and Ellie was not good with woodsmanship.

"So, I, I guess I-uh," Dash scrambled to find words, but his quest was a failure. Why were they all being so nice to him? He had abandoned them yet they still welcomed him with open arms. It made no sense to Dash. He wasn't worthy of their love. He had lost that title when he took advantage of Jake's kindness, when he left Claire to die when on a search, when he left Ryan and Ellie waiting for months in the cold for his return. And yet here he was, in the middle of god knows where, sitting around a fire with the people he knew better than their own parents, the people who accepted him as family. The people who Had accepted him, Dash would understand if they didn't anymore.

"I'm sorry," Dash wasn't even sure what he was saying, but there was no stopping now. "I'm sorry I did what I did. I'm sorry for betraying you. I'm sorry for leaving you. I don't even remember why I did but I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." He wasn't aware that he started crying either, "I so sorry, I'm sorry for taking advantage of you. Why, are you all still so kind to me after everything I've done? I don't deserve this." He gestured to the group around, not noticing how Jacob flinched at the sudden movement, "I don't understand why you guys allowed me to come back. I don't understand why you didn't just shoot me then and there."

Dash, however did see how nearly everyone cringed at the last statement. He observed the faces around him, and to his shook, saw almost no dry eyes. Claire was probably the worst of the bunch, she couldn't comprehend why Dash could think so lowly.

"Dash, what are you," Jane struggled to find her words, "What are you talking about? of course we didn't just shoot you, you're our family. And-and we know you didn't just abandon us, we're sure you had a reason, right guys?"

Everyone nodded.

Ryan stood up, "And you didn't take advantage of us. We're supposed to be family Dash, we took chances and fully knew what consequences could be. Name one time you've taken advantage of us. Go ahead, I dare you" dash could think of  a dozen examples that ate away at him during the time he was away, but stayed quite.

"That's right," Ryan continued, "you can't think of any, because it didn't happen."

Dash interrupted, "The night I left, I took advantage of Jacob and Ellie. I took advantage of Jake kindness and asked him to take watch two nights in a row, and took advantage of Ellie my making her go on a scout mission with me."
