"Alright! Please take your seats," Mr. Berkley stands at the front of the class. Everyone groans and slides into the nearest seat. "It is the beginning of a new year! I have decided that since you all are seniors this year, I will not assign seats!" A cheer erupts from the class. "But if you are sitting next to someone for whom you know you will talk to, please move!" Everyone looks side to side knowing they're gonna talk to the people around them, but no one moves.
"I have a very exciting announcement," Mr. Berkley clamps his hands together once. "We have a new foreign exchange student this year! Mr. Niall Horan is here all the way from Ireland! Niall would you like to come to the front of the class and introduce yourself?" The person in the seat behind me gets up and walks to the front of the class. Blonde hair and tight, black skinny jeans is all I can see from where I'm sitting. "HOWDY Y'ALL!" , the blonde Irish boy shouts. The whole class bursts out in laughter, myself included. He's making fun of our accents. Being down here in Arkansas, we all have southern accents, though he's exaggerating quite a bit. "Mr. Niall is actually a year younger than you all," Mr. Berkley continues,"But seeing as he has already been taught 11th grade academics we decided to bump him up a year!" A big, proud smile shows on Niall's face. You can tell he's defiantly comfortable being in front of a crowd. "You may take your seat Mr. Horan," Mr. Berkley smiles. Niall strolls back to his seat behind me, winking as he passes me. 'Oh boy,' I think 'he better not turn out to be cocky!'
"Now if everyone could open their syllabus to page one. We will be reading that as a class today." This is where I start to tune out. Every single year we read the same syllabus in every single class on the first day of school! And after 12 years of this syllabus, you can imagine my annoyance with it. I zone out of the conversation and start to think about what I will do when I get out of school today. Sonic maybe? Or even a Mexican restaurant to get some cheese dip. But my train of thought gets interrupted when I hear my name. I look up to find Mr. Berkley, along with the rest of the class, looking at a me. "What was that, Mr. Berkley?" I ask sweetly so maybe he'll go easy on me. "I asked if you would pick up where Ms. Cindy left off." I glance at Cindy to find her evilly smirking at me. "Umm..." I search the page frantically for a hint to where we might be. "Paragraph 2," I hear whispered from behind me. "Of course Mr. Berkley!" I say in the fakest cheery voice I can manage. "Every student will be expected to arrive on time and be prepared for class. Items you might need for class are, but not limited to: a writting utensil, a notebook, your class book, and a electronic device of some sort." I smile at Mr. Berkley as I finish the paragraph. I glance back to Cindy to find that her smirk has faded and she is now just glaring. I smile at her, as well. Phew that was a close one. I lean back in my seat and turn my head sideways so I know the boy behind me can hear. "Thanks," I whisper. "I'm Niall what's your name?" He whispers back. "Gemma." " Well Gemma, it was nice to be of service for you."
