"Stay inside and if you see anything suspicious, lock yourself in with no way in or out," the words of advice streaming from the mouth of my chdhood friend were spoken in a rushed and soft manner, careful enough to not be loud.

"Kook, I–," I tried to speak out but he raised his hand and my body seemed to obey him immediately without wanting to.

"(Y/n) please," his doe eyes held a vulnerability that I had never seen. Jeon Jungkook was the strongest man I knew and if this was enough to make him weak even somewhere deep within...

My chest swelled because I knew he wasn't weak for himself; he was weak for me. He was scared I would get hurt because he was strong enough to protect himself, but he can't be with me all the time.

"Promise me?" He held up his little finger like when we used to do as children. Those happy days seemed a lifetime ago when it was just a few years. Where had those years flashed by, when I learned to love the boy beside me as we went to school together, celebrated together and learnt about the world? Where did they go, when now the times of war, death and destruction were upon us, making it seem like they never existed and were, simply put, a figment of our imagination? "Promise me you'll do that. That you'll prioritise your own life above anything–"

"If I did," I interrupted him, "would that be like me? Would that be the little girl you grew up with? Would it be the girl standing in front of you who fears for not her own life but that of her close ones?"

"I know and that is exactly why," he paused to stare in my (e/c) orbs with his own chocolate like pools that held the warmth and comfort I had known since I could remember. "You're my close one, my only one, (y/n), and I can't lose you. No matter the cost, I won't lose you."

"Oh, Kookie," I embraced him, my arms snaking around the wide of his back, clutching at the thin light blue fabric that covered it. He tightened his hold on me as he embraced back and at that moment, the world seemed safe and peaceful. It seemed like I wasn't in a country that was in a war at all.

After what felt like a few seconds but at the same time, what felt like several cloudless days, we let go of each other, the blazing looks in our eyes conveying a mutual unspoken understanding to try our best to protect ourselves if we were to be separated or couldn't help the other.

"I have to go and meet Jo-ssi," Jungkook said quietly after a few minutes of silent staring. I only gave a simple nod, willing myself to find enough strength to let him go from my arms. I watched his back retreat and climb the staircase to the roof-top, where Mr. Jo would be.

I retreated to my room inside the small two-floored house we owned in the countryside. The roof-top was over the first floor, and my room was on the first floor. We were both talking in my balcony which was attached to the staircase up.

The countryside was calm because it was much away from the site of battle– but there was no denying the desperate situation we all were in. The food and water situation was worsening by the day and nobody knew when other facilities like electricity and gas would stop too.

All in all, it was a state of turmoil for our country.

I felt queasy, and I didn't know why. I felt like I should go to Jungkook so I went back to the balcony and quietly walked the narrow staircase. Just as my head was going to be visible to them, their voices became clear.

Mr. Jo was somewhat like a father figure to me and Jungkook. I had been taken in by him when I was 12 and I had lost my parents to a plane crash; he was my godfather. Jungkook was living on the streets, and Mr. Jo took pity on him and gave him a place in his house, where the three of us lived along with his wife, a kind elderly woman who recently passed away due to the war.
