"I can't believe I'm late for my first day of school!" The short, dark-haired teen gasped, tossing her phone against the desk. She had snoozed her alarm more times than she should have and was now paying for it. She quickly gathered her still packaged school supplies, dumping them into a pink, floral print homemade backpack.
"Marinette! Are you ready? School starts in 20 minutes; You're going to be late!" Her mother's voice rang out with a sweet, but mildly concerned tone from below her rooms floor hatch.
"Coming!" Marinette shouted back, rapidly tying her messy hair into two uneven pigtails.
Today had marked the second year of her Françoise Dupont high education. She was sixteen and still up to the same clumsy behavior as her previous year there.
Marinette gently shook the small red creature still lying on her bed. She awoke with a small yawn and sat up rubbing her, rather large in proportion, eyes.
"What time is it?" Her tiny voice rang out is a sluggish tone.
"Come on, Tikki, I'm going to be late!" Marinette scooped up her friend, placing her in a small satchel with a corresponding design to her backpack. She rushed down stairs into an open living space. To her left a family room, complete with a t.v., bookshelf, and a couch just big enough to fit three people. To her right, a kitchen, small but manageable and a dining table in the corner, surrounded by lace curtain covered windows. The sun pierced through them, illuminating the room in natural light. Her mom, Sabine, swayed rhythmically to her humming as she finished up her stack of breakfast pancakes, placing them elegantly on the table before Marinette. There were at most four pancakes, topped with whip cream, strawberries, blueberries, and grapes. Sabine placed a small pitcher of syrup next to the plate and a mug of orange juice on the costar to it's left.
"Thank you, mama," Marinette began "But if I stay here to finish this then I'll be late."
Sabine frowned, "Just one bite?"
Marinette protested, but Sabine was too strong for her, she took a quick bite, hugged her mom, and ran out the front door. Sabine giggled, shaking her head as she took the plate back into the kitchen.Marinette rushed through the bakery, past her busy father.
"Oh, Marinette!" His cheery voice called after her. "You're awake. Take these."
"Good morning, papa." Marinette smiled, taking the long box from her father. He hugged her.
"Have a good first day." He said before busying himself with work again.
Marinette rushed out the bakery doors, jogging to her high school, apologizing profusely as she nearly crashed into bystanders on the way. She burst into class a second before the bell, smiling an waving awkwardly at her startled classmates. She quickly took her seat next to her best friend, Alya.
"Girl, what are you doing?" Alya laughed. "That's Nino's seat."
Marinette looked up to see an embarrassed Nino standing next to her. "What do you mean?"
"What do you think I mean? Look." Alya nodded her head in the direction of Adrien, who was missing at the moment. The whole front row seat was clear.
"You saved me a seat next to Adrien?!" Marinette squealed. She hurriedly gathered her bags and took the adjacent seat next to Adriens.
"New year, New seats." Alya announced proudly.
Chloé scoffed from across the room, leaving Marinette relieved to have missed a possible confrontation between her best friend and worst enemy. Or third worst. Minutes ticked by without word of Adrien's whereabouts. 'What if he's not coming?' Mari thought to herself. She slumped against the desk, defeated. As the lunch bell rang and the class filtered to their desired locations, Mari still sat frozen at her desk. He wasn't here, and to make matters worse, an unwelcome peer strode her way over. She leaned smugly against the desk, and tapped her orange manicured nails on the dim wood.
"Hi, marinette~." Her devilish voice rang out. "I noticed you're sitting alone... Would you mind if I join you?" Her demonic grin shot through Mari. "My doctor says and in order to help with my anxiety I need to be around people at all times or else I'll break down crying; Would you be a friend and scooch over a bit?"
"Listen, 'Lie-la', as much as Id love to, I don't befriend liars." Marinette bitterness sparked her words "Honestly I don't know why anyone believes you. One of these days you'll actually need help and you'll be on your own."
Lila scoffed, and stood up straight. "Well, Marinette. At least I have more friends than you."
Marinette huffed, annoyed. "You're pity party isn't a friend group."
Lila gasped sharply, briskly walking away from her.As the bell sounded for the third time today, Mari's classmates filled their seats. Marinette glanced at the door for a brief moment before putting her head on the desk. As the bell rung again, she felt a shift in weight on the seat beside her.
"Hey, Marinette, long time no see. How was your break?" A cheerful voice called at her.
Marinette head shot up with the speed of a bullet. A big grin over took her once sorrow-filled face.
A light haired boy sat before her, green eyes sparkling with the gleam of emeralds. His smile brightened the looming dark air around Mari. He wore a black color-striped shirt, with a bleach white button-up over it.
"I guess we are desk buddies now."
It was Adrien Agreste.
