Rolling Thunder

Brooklyn Jamison

"So I take it that there's a reason you haven't been sleeping in your own home?" I nudge her jokingly as we walk to the training room. "Maybe a...boy?"

She tucks her lips into her mouth, a nervous habit you don't get to see often with Rose. "Uh yes. He's--uh--he's different."

I prod her, "Different? Elaborate."

I can see the mental debate on her face before she says, "I can hear his thoughts."

I sneak another glance at her face, not understanding what she's getting at. She can read everybody's thoughts. "And?"

"I heard him last night. And I wasn't trying. It just happened," she finally admits to me.

I knew Rose was getting herself involved with someone else, but little did I know that he was going to cause more problems for her. Stopping dead in my tracks, putting it together that the only other person whose thoughts she can hear without trying is the one and only Parker Stacy.

"What?"

She grabs my elbow and starts dragging me to training room, my body in shock from the revelation.

"Don't be so dramatic. I thought it was weird too, but it's got to be nothing... Right? I mean it's no secret that something's going on with me..."

Yeah, something's going on for sure.

The thought crosses my mind, and I wonder for a moment if I should voice it, knowing the subject matter is sensitive to my friend.

"His birthday?" I ask, inquiring if it fit the requirement to be Rose's person. They always bare the same birthday.

She shakes her head as we walk through another hallway. "I haven't asked; I don't know. But do you think it could even be possible... I mean Parker--"

"Parker was an ass, and this tiny bit of information is making me wonder if he was even your person at all, Rose."

"He was...is? I don't know. He for sure at least was... But do you think it's possible?"

"With you," I place an arm around her shoulders. "I don't think anything's impossible. I'll look into some lore when we get to the training room; maybe Eddie knows something."

I could sense that she was already less tense after confessing this to me. But I feel the pressure shifted to me. What did this mean for her?

"Well, who is this guy then? I want to meet him," I flash her a toothy grin, happy that she's happy, though I can feel the impending doom crawl up my spine.

We enter the bustling atrium as she tells me he works at the bar in town, how funny and cynical he is, his hair color and how curly it is. "And he's got these green, green eyes that I swear I've seen before. He's just--"

I feel my mouth go dry. "He's just a lot like that guy?" I point to the dark curly haired man talking to Hayden, who is walking toward us.

The fear melts across her face, "What the fuck? Brooke, get me out of here. Now," we start to rush back through the hall we just came from, but Hayden calls out to the both of us.

"Black! Jamison! Come on over here."

"Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuuuuuuuck," Rose whispers under her breath as she slowly turns around.

Rose and the man both make eye contact, obviously trying to hide their shock. Neither of them make a move to show that they know each other. And that may be smart considering Agent Rain stood between us all.

Rain looks to me, then to Rose, then to the man next to her, sensing the entire situation.

"Zack, this is Brooklyn Jamison and Rose Black, two of my recruits. Brooklyn, Black, this is Zack Griffyn, my partner."

It almost hurts me as well as the man holds out his hand to Rose, "Zack Griffyn, nice to meet you."

The look on both of their faces as their hands touch is undeniably emotional. "Rose," is all she's able to utter.

When he reaches out to me, I make sure to crush his hand as hard as I can, letting him know that I know. "Brooklyn Jamison."

I look to Hayden again, and it's obvious she's already put this all together.

"You guys can come to me for any questions you have. I'm not quite up to Hayden's par, but I promise I'm a very close second."

"We won't have any questions," Rose bites back at him before stomping away to a hall across the atrium. If she hadn't have given it away yet, she surely did now.

He watches her go, unable to take his eyes off her. I continue to eye him as he turns back to look at us, realizing he'd been caught.

"I'll--uh--I'll see you ladies in training later," and then he goes in the opposite direction.

Agent Rain and I both exchange dumbfounded looks, not sure what to even say.

"Well, I didn't see that coming," she huffs, ruffling her hair.

"I don't really think any of us did..."
