'AROOOO!' I heard as I came crashing through the bushes. "That wolf thing... It's chasing us." I said to my little sister as we ran. I kept running, hoping it wouldn't catch up. I saw it. It killed my dad. I kept running, but I couldn't shake the sight. It tearing into his chest, ripping out his heart. Apparently, I had stopped, because when I looked up, I heard my sister shouting. "Come on Conor!". I shook myself out of it and I kept running, not stopping until I heard a loud thud. I turned around to see Esmerelda, my little sister, sprawled out on the ground, I saw the wolf closing in.
I ran to her and picked her up, slinging her over my shoulder, and carrying her back to the house. I thought that maybe if we got inside the house it would give up. I ran as fast as I could. I can die. But I would not let that thing, that beast harm my sister. I ran faster than I ever ran before. Eventually reaching the house, getting inside, shutting, and locking the door.
I lay Esmerelda down on the floor, checking her pulse as they taught us in Health class. Still a heartbeat. Good. I see the door start to shake. Please don't break through, please don't break through. I see the hinges start to rattle on the door as I stand in front of Esmerelda, to protect her. You won't touch her. I stand my ground as the door begins to rattle off and the hinges begin to buckle. The door explodes and I stand paralyzed as the wolf lunges towards us.
I jump up and gasp, breathing heavily. It was just a dream. Just... A dream. I breathe a sigh of relief, then I remember my Dad was still missing... probably dead. They never found the body after the accident. Just the car. They guessed he wasn't wearing a seat belt and his body was pulled through the windshield by the current of the river.
He'd been gone for almost seven months. I guess I should have moved on by then, but I didn't. I was still grieving. Every now and then I turned to say something but realized he wasn't there. Sometimes I would stare at the door, hoping for him to come back. Other times I would take off the ring he gave me and throw it around. But eventually, I'd put it back on and apologize to him for what I did and just ask him to come back.
I looked over at my bedside. 7:36 AM, I sighed softly. "It's just another day," I said calmly to myself as I stood, trudged over to my closet and opened it, I took out one of my uniforms and a solid black tie. I hung it on the doorknob and went into the bathroom to shower. I peeled off my night clothes and glanced at my pale body. I sigh and turn on the water, stepping into the shower.
I let the hot water pour over my body as I rested. I waited for the water to reach the optimal temperature. I always preferred the water to be at least warmer than room temperature before I start to wash. Starting from my hair and moving down, and vice versa when rinsing. I got out of the shower after I finished rinsing my hair, and I dried off. I grabbed my uniform and put it on, adjusting my tie when I finished.
I went downstairs and hugged my mother, Davina, as she made breakfast. I saw my sister, Esmerelda, half asleep at the table so I kissed her head and laid her favourite blanket over her shoulders. "I'm heading out Mum," I said to her softly. She waved goodbye without turning around. "Bye, Conor..." I heard from Esmerelda, who wasn't fully asleep. She yawned, and I smiled and turned around after grabbing the keys to my car.
I walked to my midnight coloured Rolls Royce Phantom. I never thought I deserved this car but since I was a straight-A student, excelling in all my classes, and extracurricular activities, Mum and Dad gave it to me anyway, for my 18th birthday. I walked to the driver's side and unlocked the door, before sitting in the driver's seat a and starting the car. Then I looked down at my watch. 8:31.
Vrrr Vrrr. I checked my phone and smiled when I saw Serena's face pop up as a message. 'Still waiting for the blasted bus. I might be running late.' her message said. I chuckled and started driving to her house. I turned onto her street and pulled up in front of her house.
