February 17, 2017. My seventeenth birthday. Today is supposed to be a good day. A happy one. But that is far from what I'm feeling. I feel depressed, alone, scared, etc. This is my first birthday without my family. Although Luke (my kidnappers son) did buy me a cake and tried to make today a less bit miserable for me, I couldn't stop myself from hating him for not helping me escape this place. I've told him how much I miss my family. I have cried on his shoulder begging him to help me, but all he ever said was that he can't do anything.

When I first got here, I was locked up in the basement for a whole week. The windows were tinted and blocked off. The doors were chained locked from the outside. The basement was dirty and smelled disgusting. There were holes in the walls and the paint was coming off. The floor was old and molding. All I could do was stand in place and just cry. After I calmed down, I heard the door leading upstairs being unlocked. I got scared so I went to the farthest corner of the room and cowered away. It was him coming down with a mattress. He just through it on the floor and didn't say anything. As the week went by, I tried every minute of the day to find a way to escape. To figure out a way to break the boards or the locks. Nothing worked. But who was I kidding, nothing was going to work either way. At the end of everyday I just ended up in a ball crying until I fell asleep. I felt like giving up, but I didn't because that wasn't what I was taught. But as the days went by, I was losing hope.

My birthday started with me waking up, making my bed, showering, and brushing my teeth. After that I went into my closet to ponder on dressing up nice for my birthday or just wear my usual sweats and a t-shirt. I ended just wearing my usual because I know that I am going to either way be cleaning around the house. Once I finished getting dressed, I went upstairs to make Luke and his father some breakfast. I got the coffee maker started as I was thinking what I could make them. I looked into the fridge to see what there was. There was a carton of eggs, half a gallon of milk and some fruits. "Hmmm, note to self, tell Luke to buy more groceries" I said to myself as I was getting the carton of eggs and the fruit out of the fridge. I had decided to make them some omelets with a side of a fruit bowl. As I was finishing up cutting the fruits, I hear footsteps coming down the stairs. I didn't want to turn around in fear that it would be Luke's dad that would be standing there. As I was cooking the omelet I realized that it didn't smell like beer. When I turned around I noticed that indeed it wasn't Luke's dad that came down. Sitting across from the island was Luke.

"Good morning Lex" he said with a smile on his face.

"Good morning Luke" I respond attempting to smile back.

"Happy Birthday. Sorry that you have to celebrate it here, but you know the circumstances. I wish you could..." he starts saying until I interrupt him.

"Thanks. You actually remembered." I tell him. This time with a sincere smile.

"You're welcome" he says while letting out a breath. He continues by saying "If you want I can go get you a cake from the store"

"Thanks, but no. I'm fine. You don't need to buy me a cake, but I do need you to go out and buy more groceries please. We're kinda low on food."

"OK. I'll go to the store around noon. Just write me a list of what to buy and anything that you would like.

I just nod my head up and down and put his omelet in front of him and then I put his bowl of fruit in front of him.

"Do you want me to make you your coffee?" I asked him since he still doesn't have it.

"No thanks. I'll make it myself. You should have my father's ready though. He should be up soon and you know how he gets if his coffee isn't ready."

"Yeah I know" I respond with a frown on my face.

As I'm finishing making his coffee I hear grumbling coming down the stair. I quickly put the mug on the island and put myself to making his omelet. I finished as he sat down on the stool. I slide the plate to him and then place the bowl of fruit next to his omelet. As they quietly eat there breakfast, I start washing the dishes that I have used. Once I finished with the dishes, I heard him get up and go to his room. I grabbed his dirty dishes and started washing them. Then Luke came and put his dirty dishes in the sink.

"Thanks for breakfast. It was delicious like always" he says with a big smile.

"You're welcome"

As I was finishing washing the dishes, I hear someone stomping down the stairs and head straight out the door. I heard the car start and leave the driveway. Once I couldn't hear the engine anymore I let out a sigh of relief and without knowing, my shoulders slumped down. After cleaning the island where they were eating, I went to his room to pick up the beer bottle that would always litter the bedroom floor. It took me about an hour to clean his room because he just loved to make my life so miserable and difficult. After cleaning his room I went to clean Luke's room. His was way more easier to clean. All I had to do was make his bed and get his laundry from the dirty hamper. After doing that, I went to the basement where the washing machine was and put in the dirty clothes in. As the clothes were in the washing machine I started cleaning the house. I started with the living room and then made myself around the house. Halfway through, I went to check on the clothes and seen that it has stopped so I switched the clothes to the dryer. Once that was done, I continued cleaning around the house. By the time I was done cleaning the house it was already 12:30 pm. I suddenly remembered that I had to write Luke the grocery list. So I grabbed the notepad on the counter and start writing the essentials. Then I write a separate list for what I wanted. Once I was done writing, I left the papers on the counter. Then fifteen minutes later, I heard Luke coming down.

"Hey Lex, did you write the list for the groceries?" he asked while putting on his jacket on.

"Yeah, it's in the counter"

"OK, I'll be back in a while. I'll try not to take long."

"OK. Be careful."

"I will" he said as he shut and locked the door.

As I heard him lock all the locks I sighed. I went down stairs and got the clothes out of the dryer and went upstairs to start folding. Once I was done folding, I put the clothes in the dressers. I then went downstairs to read a bit before Luke came home with the groceries.

"I'm back!" I hear Luke yell. I lost time as I was reading. I quickly put my book away and went upstairs.

"Hey..." I froze. As I was opening the door I saw Luke standing right there with a small cake in his hand with the number 17 candles. I just stared at him dumbfounded. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to cry. I found myself walking towards him and hugging him.

"Thank you" I whispered to him as a tear dropped down my cheek.

He hugged me back without saying anything.
