Sweat dripped down your face.

Adrenaline pumped through your veins.

Your heart beat thumped in your head.

Your vision was a blur.

You pulled yourself off the hard ground, wiping liquid from your forehead. Blood. Theirs? Yours? You didn't care. You just cared about winning.

You heard the unmistakable sound of a knife being unsheathed, and you guessed your attacker wanted this over. That was fine by you.

As your attacker lunged for your throat, blade in hand, you ducked and kicked their legs out from under them, making sure to roll away so the blade didn't come down on you. You quickly stood up, stamping on their hand, forcing them to drop the blade. You heard the snapping of bones. Good.

You picked up the blade and stabbed it through some clothing around your attacker's neck, pinning him to the ground.

A grunt from behind you rang through the air. He had back up? You whipped your head around, assuming fighting stance, hands covering your face. You were about to charge until your vision cleared and you saw the supposed back up.

"Diego! What are you doing here?" You asked your leather clad partner.

"I was going to help you? You know, as your partner?" he said in an accusing tone. You ignored him as you walked past him. He grabbed you by the arm and spun you around to face him.

"What, Diego?" You asked, starting to get irritated. Did he seriously think this was your fault? You stopped they guy from robbing the nearby jewellery store, and you only walked away with a small cut on your arm. Was he made you didn't wait for him?

"Why didn't you wait for me?" He asked, as if reading you thoughts.

"Because I can handle myself!" you said, ripping your arm out of his grip. "I'm going home."

"I'll take you." Diego said, a hint of sadness in his voice. You felt a pang of guilt – you never wanted to upset Diego, but sometimes your anger got the best of you.

"Ok."

The car ride to your house was silent. You offered him a coffee once you two got inside, and he just nodded. No response.

"What is it, Diego?" you were fed up with the silent treatment.

"You could've got hurt, (y/n)." he said quietly.

"But I didn't."

"That's beside the point!"

"Then what is the point?"

"What if I'd have lost you?"

You were silent. Sure, you guys were partners, but you didn't think he actually cared for you that much. You always imagined that if something happened to you, he'd just find another willing student to train to be his partner.

"Lost me?" you repeated.

"Yes, (y/n). Lost you. You're my partner."

"Diego, I..."

"You're not just my partner, either. I know we don't talk much about our personal lives, but you're my best friend."

"Do 30-year old's have best friends?" you dared to quip.

"Yeah?" he said, but it sounded more like a question. His tone made you laugh. Your laugh made him smile. You loved his smile.

You loved a lot about him.

"Well, I guess if I had a best friend, it would be you, too." You said, feeling happy for the first time today. "I should probably work on your coffee, then, hey?"

"Could I grab two sugars today?" he asked.

"Ooo, feeling sweet are we?" You questioned, mocking his choice.

"I guess I am."

There were a few minutes of comfortable silence while you went about making the coffees.

"(y/n)?" Diego called out from the lounge area, already having made himself comfortable on your couch.

"What, do you want three sugars now?"

"Only if you're the third." You stopped. Was he flirting with you? Unsure of how to respond, you attempted to match his level of playfulness.

"You think I'm sweet?" wow, that was great. You were silently kicking yourself till you heard Diego laugh. He had moved from the couch to the doorway into the kitchen, leaning on it and smirking at you.

"Certainly not. You're the most bitter person I know. But I like that." Oooooh damn, he was good. You started to walk towards him, swaying your hips slightly. You sat up on a counter that was close to him, swinging your legs.

"How do you know I'm bitter?" You asked coyly. "You can't be 100% till you've tasted me."

"I'm always open to experimenting." He said, moving closer and closer to you till he stood up against the counter and between your legs. He grabbed your chin in his hand and tilted your head up. His beautiful eyes flicked from yours to your lips, before closing the distance swiftly.

Your lips moved in synch with his. They were slightly chapped, but that just added a certain roughness that you loved. You deepened the kiss as you wrapped you hands around his neck and he moved his arms to your waist. You sighed contently into the kiss, losing your self in Diego's presence. He broke away, much to your disappointment.

"Did you still want a coffee?" He asks, voice low and husky.

"You're an idiot" you said, pulling him back to you.
