Chapter Ten: Home?

I woke up to shouting and scrambling. I could feel paramedics trying to stop my bleeding. The wreck I got into was probably the worst one I've gotten into. "Payton? Can you hear me," one asked. I. Couldn't respond, I tried to, but couldn't. They lifted me onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. Before they shut the doors, I saw my dad and Paul.

When I woke up, I was in the hospital. I looked out the window and saw the Golden Gate Bridge, back in California. I pushed my nurse pager and one came in instantly. "Can I get some water," I asked. "Sure," she replied. She ran out of the room. Agents Harris and Randall walked in. Agent Harris was smiling, and so was Randall. "You're not being charged. The judge decided it was in the publics best interest for Vega and Keith to be put down, and you didn't do it, but you contributed to it. The cop from Arizona was the only one who fought against you. You got lucky," Harris said. "Thanks," I replied. My nurse came back in with water and the agents left. My parents walked into the room next. "What," I asked. "Brett's-." "I know," I interrupted my mom. "Good job Payton," my dad said. "I'm done racing for awhile, well, driving period," I replied. "You have a special visitor," my mom said. They left and Garrett walked in. "Hey," I greeted. "Hi. Wow you look like hell," he said. I laughed. "I feel like it too," I replied. Garrett sat on my bed and held my hand. "I'm so sorry, about, Brett," he said. "Me to," I replied. A tear slipped down my face as I saw the pink diamond ring on my finger. "He gave this to me before I left for the Course Dé Rue. I loved him, I was in love with him," I added. I was now full on crying now. Garrett had a look of sympathy on his face. He hugged me. "It'll be okay," he consoled. "What if it's not? Did anyone say if his parents knew or not? I haven't seen them in years," I asked. "I heard your parents talking about it, that his parents hadn't been told yet," Garrett replied. "Will you get them," I asked. Garrett nodded and then left the room.

Paul ran in after Garrett left. "Hey," I greeted. He hugged me. "You okay? How do you-." "I'm fine, don't worry," I interrupted. My parents came into the room. "Mom, dad, do Brett's parents know," I asked. "Agents Randall and Harris were going to tell them," my dad replied. "Okay," I replied.

After almost three weeks in the hospital I was going home. The only person to visit me in the hospital every day was Garrett. I was really starting to like him. I was led out of the hospital by a male nurse who was pushing my wheelchair. Just out of the hospital doors, my dad stepped out my blue Mustang. He ran to my side and grabbed my hand, helping me out of the chair. I gave him a big hug. "Hi dad. Been busy," I asked. "Very," he replied. He kissed the top of my hand and then helped me into the car. He got into the drivers seat and pulled away from the hospital. "There better not be a damn party at the house when I get there," I said. In response, my dad just laughed.

As we got nearer to the house, I saw lots of cars and a few news vans. The car was swarmed with reporters when we pulled into the driveway. When the gates closed behind us, the reporters were gone. I saw a full blown barbecue with family and friends. My dad parked and then helped me out of the car. I walked up to everyone. They were sitting around a fire eating hotdogs and burgers. Adam and Adrian were manning the grill. Zayn came up to me and hugged me. "I missed you Payton," he said. "I missed you too," I replied. The rest of my siblings and I had a moment, along with my mom and sister. I was greeted by Paul and Rob as well. "Someone's been asking about you," my dad said as he approached me. "Who," I asked. "Garrett," he replied. "Where's he at," I asked. "I'd have to guess Rob's," my dad replied. I slowly went to my car and drove out of the driveway.

I got to Rob's and saw Garrett driving on the track. I parked next to the entrance. When he came around the track again, he stopped and approached me. "Hey," I greeted. "Hi," Garrett replied. "Hi," I asked. "Sorry, I just, I'm sorry," he replied. "For," I asked. "Brett," he replied. I looked down at the floor. "Yeah, me to," I sulked. He approached me and pushed my hair behind my ears. "Over the last few weeks, I've fallen in love with you. Not just because he's gone, but since I first met you. When you talked about that car of yours, you lit up. When you talked about Brett, you became this whole other person. I fell in love with who you are and who you were. I know things are never going to be the same, after everything that's happened lately but-." I stopped Garrett by kissing him. "I feel the same way, Brett would want me to be happy. He'd want me to move on. But you have to know, he was my first real boyfriend, my best friend, my partner in crime-literally. You're this sweet, innocent, sophomore in high school." "I must admit, I went on a boost with your dad. He said I did good," Garrett joked. I laughed. "You're so dumb," I teased. I playfully hit him on the shoulder. He kissed me. "It's soon but, I really do love you Payton." "I love you too Garrett." We kissed again.

After a quick race with Garrett, that I won, I was on my houses' street when I saw cop cars and police lights all down the street. I pulled into my driveway, just to have fifty cops staring at me. I parked by my house and got out of my car. Agents Harris and Randall approached me. "What am I going in for now," I asked. "It's not you," Randall said. I saw my mom run out of the house. "Payton," she cried. She had tears running down her face. "Mom," I asked. She ran up to me and hugged me. "What's going on," I asked. Harris put his hand on my shoulder. "Alexis has been kidnapped," Harris said.
