I stood up from crouching next to the boy. I clenched my jaw as I looked into his green eyes; staring into space, yet staring at nothing. It made me uncomfortable, so I crouched down again and ever so gently shut his eyes with my fingers.

After a few seconds, I could hear footsteps coming around the corner. I jumped over the wall at the end of the alley, which only lead to another alley joining to another sidewalk. I put my back up against it, waiting to hear if anyone noticed the boy so I could get out of there. If anyone saw me, I'd be screwed: everyone would be on the hunt for me.

Luckily I jumped over the wall, because I heard a sickening cry from a woman. The last thing I heard before I ran all the way to the bridge was her terrified sobbing.

I had to tell Peter now. I couldn't let him start looking for the culprits, because he would die. It made me shudder to think there were other vampires near where I went to school, putting my friends and other students in a lot of danger. The annoying thing was, it wasn't something you could control. If it was a gang of kids, sure, you could stop them. But vampires...?

They were only doing what they were made for, and for them, it wasn't against the law.

"Tony, I need to tell you something."

"Not right now, Dakota." He continued to type away at his laptop.

I threw my wig with such force that it knocked a cup – luckily plastic – off of the coffee table.

"It's important! Much more important than your stupid laptop!"

He sighed impatiently. "What, then?"

"That boy that was missing on the news?" I said. He raised an eyebrow. "I found him."

"Really?" He answered. "That's great!"

"Not great, Tony, NOT great. He's dead! In an alley. And if I hadn't had heard the woman who was walking by, it wouldn't have looked good on me." I dropped my gaze to the floor and leaned against the arm of the sofa. Tony left it a minute before speaking again.

"Do you have any more information about it?"

I was about to speak but was silenced by a headline coming up on the news on the TV behind Tony. I grabbed the controller and turned it up.

"Teen missing in queens found dead a few blocks away from Midtown High School with mysterious bite marks," the news reporter read out. Tony looked at me, but I kept my eyes on the screen.

"Investigators have said the bites looked as if they came from an animal."

I was slightly relived at that: of course, their first thought wouldn't be a vampire, but at least they hadn't considered it. Yet.

"Is that...?" Tony trailed off.

I gave him a stiff nod.

"Unfortunately, yes." I folded my arms across my chest. Tony looked startled, staring wide-eyed of the window. He had no words for what seemed like an hour. In the silence, worried thoughts circled my brain.

"We need to tell Nick," Tony finally replied, shutting his laptop. I looked at him.

"There's not much I can do about it, let alone Nick," I said, shrugging. "I can't just go and kill off a whole band of vampires without it going unnoticed."

"You know for sure it's a whole band?"

"I guess not," I answered. "I'll keep an eye out still."

He gave me a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Dakota."

"Don't worry," I replied immediately. "I'm used to it."
