When Lily returned home that night, she was exhausted and her makeup had worn off resulting in uneven skin tone and two black eyes. Throughout the day, she hadn't had any encounters with Dr. Parsons other than the two that morning. For that she was grateful, but what Lucinda had said scared her. She felt completely alone having to deal with two men. For a while now, she'd had too much to handle.
It was ten o'clock in the evening and all she wanted to do was get out of her scrubs, take a shower, brush her teeth, and then go to bed. With a tired sigh, she turned the key to shut off her truck and opened the door. As she climbed out, she nearly stumbled. She hadn't realized she'd been that exhausted. After a long day of head traumas, overdoses on medicine, running around taking patients vitals, and a gunshot victim with internal hemorrhaging, she felt ready to collapse.
Her mouth released a low yawn and she found herself shutting the door on the truck. A horse whinnied in the barn and she was thankful that Tami fed the horses whenever she had to work unexpectedly. Slinging her purse over her shoulder, she groggily pushed a hand through her disheveled hair and made her way inside. The door squeaked as she pushed it open and she heard some conversation in the living room. Tami's and Daniel's voices. Just what she needed. If she had another encounter with a man who infuriated her to no end today...
Please no she thought as she kicked off her shoes, don't strike up a conversation with me Daniel.
When she stepped into the kitchen, she opened the fridge and looked for something to eat. If anyone worked as hard as she did all day, they wouldn't have time to eat. She saw the regular plastic gallons of milk, bundles of bread, and some leftover casserole that Tami had made on Sundays, but cold food didn't seem that good to her at the moment. Especially if it had been made a week ago.
Tomorrow was Sunday! Tomorrow she had to give a lesson to her laurels on temptation! Tomorrow she had to get up early! Why hadn't the thought occurred to her until now? She was so stupid! She released a groan of sharp anguish. She had so much going on.
"Lily!" Tami called from the living room, "Are you alright?"
Lily could have screamed at her. She was not alright! For goodness sake, words couldn't describe the despair she had felt when Daniel had kissed her that morning. She and Tami had a fight that morning, Dr. Parsons was giving her the worst time, the gunshot victim that day was a dramatic mess after they had fixed him with 100% surity that he would live, and she hadn't eaten. To top it all off her sister had cancer. Was there anything alright with that?
"No," Lily said as if the answer was obvious. It was a rough day, a rough life. More rough than she would have liked it.
Tami came into the kitchen wearing Lily's dark blue top with the cutoff shoulders. She was wearing her clothes!
"Oh, so now you're wearing my clothes?" her eyes held a piercing gaze of annoyance.
The color drained from Tami's face, "I... I was just..."
"Forget it," Lily said waving a hand, "I'm going to bed."
With a gruff grunt, she headed into the living room. Daniel stood up when she walked in. She stopped when she saw him. He looked like he was about to say something, then Tami walked in. He looked from Lily to Tami and then uttered, "I hope your day was nice."
A small scoff escaped her. "Screw you," she said to him as she stomped her way to the stairs. She hopped up the stairs taking them two at a time before she came to the top and went into the first door on the left. Her bedroom, her sanctuary. Her peace and quiet. She hoped no one would knock on her door. That was the last thing she needed.
