Painting ''Death on a Pale Horse'' (1796) by Benjamin West

The legend says God holds a scroll of seven seals of judgment. When broken, first four will free the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - riding on red, white, black and pale horses. Each one of them is representing the evil in the world; war, pestilence, famine and death. In the church's apocalyptic vision, it is to believed they are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world, as harbingers of the Last Judgment. Till that day, they are patiently waiting in the darkness of hell for their final call.

However, one of them is not in hell, not in heaven and certainly not in purgatory, but on Earth, accompanying the lives of plants, animals, and humans.

The Horsemen on a pale horse, Death.

''When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come and see!" I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.'' (Revelation 6:7-8)
