PART III - THE FOG

Storm and night stepped from the sky, leaving a path of broken trees and flooded pavements. Grass bent under the weight of the morning dew, revealing a lonely frog, jumping between puddles. The thick fog lifted from the cold ground and hid the Grey Deer Base between nearby hills.

Bed's wooden structure cracked when the restless body turned once more. White covers hung lifelessly over the polished floor as troubled eyes stared at the ceiling. Julius sighed and sat on the bed, grunting at his sore muscles. His hand massaged stiff neck, slowly he turned to look out of the window. Trees drown in the fog as well as the whole outside world. Grey fog mixed with a grey sky, making it impossible to see the line between earth and heaven.

Sound of a pen meeting paper, again and again, filled Julius office. Yami stood in front of his desk, observing his superior in concern. Young Capitan in trance signed reports not even reading them. Finally, he looked up at Yami, 'I'm leaving for a mission tomorrow morning.' His long fingers took another paper and signed it, 'While I'm not here would you mind looking after squad for me?'. Yami raised his eyebrow and sifted his weight on left leg. 'I don't mind,' his eyes noticed a grey folder laying at the edge of the desk, 'so what's the mission?'. Julius halted his writing and with the corner of the eye, he found grey object lying next to him. I left it in my room, didn't I? He thought and cleared his throat, 'It's just a small recce'. He looked at Yami and smiled, 'I should be back within a week'.

Moon hid behind black clouds, making this evening exceptionally dark. The forest around Grey Deer Base disappeared in shadows. Not even a sound escaped from its direction. Yami stood on the balcony, leaning on the stone railing. He grimaced at how his lungs hurt from cold air. 'Yami-san is something wrong?', he turned around to see Marx illuminated by a single candle. A boy with blue hair and intellect more impressing than his body build smiled at him. Yami sighed and returned his gaze towards the sky. 'I have a bad feeling for him to be alone', Marx frowned and approached his colleague standing next to him, 'Why do you think so?'. Yami tried to listen to his surroundings but he could only hear his heartbeat. 'The night he got this mission, it was storming.' Shivers ran down his spine at the memory of that night. 'No one would walk in that pouring rain while having a magic spell to move around places.' Marx looked at Yami's hands as he gripped the railing making the stone to crush a little. 'When he came back he was soaking wet. What bothered him so much?' He let his hands fall at his sides and he took a deep breath, 'It makes me feel uneasy'. Marx looked down and dead silence surrounded two knights. Worry overshadowed his young face as he spoke, 'When you mention it, he was a bit off before he left.'
