Hannah and Robert started packing while Matthew looked at them sadly in the veranda. Lucas stood next to him. "Hey, don't be sad" he told him kindly. "I will do my best to convince my parents to let me come here every weekend" Matthew's face enlightened. "Really? I thought you wanted to leave as soon as possible!" The old man yelled standing up quickly. The boy chuckled " well, I suppose that was true at first but I really had a lot of fun and I'd like to come back" his grandfather looked at him skeptically for a brief moment then hugged him tightly. "You're welcome anytime my boy!"Lucas waved at his grandfather and sat in the car. Hannah, who was waiting for her husband in the front seat, glanced at her son's slightly disappointed face. She turned to him completely "what's wrong Lucas?" She asked. He shook his head slowly "I'm going to miss this place..." Hannah looked at him dumbfounded. She was so shocked to hear her son speak that way about this place. She thought he hated being here because he was away from his hobbies. The woman ran out of the car to her husband.
"What is it Hannah?" He inquired. His wife took a second to catch her breath "Our son is broken!" She exclaimed. Robert knew his wife used weird expressions so he placed both of his hands on her shoulders and asked "what do you mean by that?" "Lucas said he will miss this place!"The man looked at his wife with a look of disbelief. He walked over to the car and asked his son to roll down the window. "Will you really miss this place?" Lucas looked at his father kindly "Yeah! I want to come back often! Is that okay?"
Robert's eyes widened. He smiled proudly "then how about every weekend? sounds good?" The boy nodded happily. On the way back home, Lucas thought about his friends. He debated on whether or not to tell them about his discovery. He let out a long sigh and leaned his head on the window.
~ Time skip ~ after a couple of hours
The car pulled up in front of the house. The couple stepped out tiredly. The drive was so long and exhausting that they were too worn out to do much. Seeing his parents so tired, the boy decided to take the initiative and bring in their bags. Robert, who was carrying his wife back inside the house, gave a grateful smile to his son.
After the boy finished bringing the suitcases and random bags inside the house, he walked up to his room and threw himself on his bed. He stared at the ceiling for a while then took out the family book. The strange writings seemed so ancient. Suddenly, Lucas had an idea. He quickly took his phone, which his father placed on his nightstand, and dialed a phone number.
"Hello?"
"James? It's Lucas"
"Oh Lucas, sup?"
" nothing much, are you free tomorrow after school?"
"Hmm yeah I think, why?"
"We need to talk, anyway I need to get some rest now, see you tomorrow"Lucas hung up and put his phone down on the nightstand. He let out a long sigh before deciding to go take a shower.
The next day, Lucas went to school thinking about the book and the discoveries he made at his grandfather's farmhouse. He couldn't concentrate in class, he simply stared out the window and thought about the book and the trapdoor. Emma, a classmate sitting near him, noticed how he wasn't concentrating and decided to write extra notes to give him later. Most of the girls from Lucas's class really liked him and tried several times to tell him but the boy couldn't really care about such things. He'd rather be with his friends and read. After class, Lucas quickly took his belongings and was about to leave when Emma walked up to him. She had dark eyes and short brown hair. She was pretty short and spoke with an annoyingly high pitched voice."Oh! Lucas wait a sec!" She yelled as she saw him about to leave. He looked at her and raised a brow "what is it?" She handed him the notes she took "I noticed you weren't really listening to class today. I thought something must be wrong so I took a few notes for you!" She said smiling. He took the notes and smiled at her "thank you, that was very kind of you. Well, I'll see you tomorrow" he waved goodbye as he walked towards the exit. "Wait!" She yelled. He turned around frowning slightly "what is it now?" He asked trying not to sound too impatient. "Mind if I come with you? You live a few blocks away from my house so it'll be nice to walk home with someone" she said. Lucas Frowned again "I'm sorry, I have to go somewhere.. also, how do you know where I live?" He inquired. Her eyes widened slightly at that and looked away. "I..uh, I see you from time to time when I'm on my way home" she said quickly "well anyway, I see that you can't today. I hope we could walk home together one day! Bye" she continued as she walked away.
Lucas shook his head and walked over to James who was waiting for him. "What took you so long?" He asked frowning. "Someone wanted to talk to me. Anyway let's go." He answered as they walked to his friends place. James was Lucas's best friend. They went to school together. James was tall and smart. He knows a lot of people and tends to get a few problems. His long black hair was always tied back and he seemed to always hate it when people asked if he ever wanted to cut it.
Once they arrived at his place, Lucas followed his friend to his room and took out the large book. "What's that?" Asked James. "It's a family book I found in my grandfather's attic."
James looked at the book carefully. "Okay, interesting but really. Why did you call yesterday? What do you need?" Lucas looked at his friend and showed him the weird writings "I called you because I need you to help me find someone who can read this." James frowned and took a closer look at it. He glanced at Lucas before sighing "I think I can find someone who can help" Lucas smiled as James took out his laptop and started typing.A few minutes later, James suddenly stopped typing and looked at Lucas. Lucas looked back. "What?" He asked. James frowned and continued staring at him. Lucas sighed "James stop that. What is it?" He asked. "Why do you want to know what those writings say?" He asked suddenly. "Well because it's in my family book and it'd be interesting to know" he answered "stop it Lucas. You're hiding the other half" he replied. Lucas let out a long sigh "fine." James knew Lucas very well and even though Lucas is good at finding excuses, he knows when he's not being completely honest. Lucas told him what he found in his grandfather's farmhouse and explained what happened when he entered the first door. James furrowed his brows. He didn't really believe him. I mean come on, a boy finding a trap door that leads to six more doors and once he enters one he turns into one of his ancestors...not very believable. But James didn't really notice any of the signs of when Lucas was lying so he was very confused. He thought for a while before deciding to go along with what he said. Lucas chuckled "I know you don't believe me. It's fine, at least I know it's true" he shrugged as James looked back at his screen and started typing again.
Time passed and James showed Lucas the screen. "This is my cousin's friend's sister." He said proudly. "She studies strange writings and their history" he continued. Lucas looked at her information. "Does she live far?" Lucas inquired. "A bit. But we can still go!" He smiled brightly. Lucas nodded. "Alright then, when do we go?" "How about Friday?" James suggested. Lucas nodded and stood up "thanks James, I really appreciate it. See you tomorrow" he said as he took his things and left the house.
On his way home, Lucas felt like someone was following him. He took out his phone to try and see from the reflection if he could spot the person behind him. He only caught a glimpse of what seemed to be a girl hide behind a house. He shook his head "man this is creepy" he whispered as he walked into a shop. After pretending to want to buy something for a very long time, the boy walked out the shop and walked home quickly.
The next day, the boy went to school early. When he realized he was a bit too early, he sighed at sat in his seat. He was about to take out a book when his friend Raoul sat in the seat behind him. "That's weird... I never thought I'd see you in class so early" he said smiling at him. "Well good morning to you too Raoul." He said yawning. Raoul laughed "yeah good morning. Anyway what are you doing here so early?" He asked curiously. "No particular reason. I just woke up early and since I had nothing to do, I came to class." He shrugged "and why are you always early?" He inquired. Raoul smiled "practically the same thing" the two continued chatting as the class slowly filled with their classmates.
During lunch break, Lucas hung out with his friends Dave, Raoul and James. The rest of the day was ordinary except for when it was time to head home. Lucas walked home like he did usually but he kept feeling that uncomfortable presence behind him. He tried glancing behind him but he couldn't find anyone. "I should start being really careful on my way back home" he whispered as he opened the front door. He walked in and greeted his parents before walking up to his room and looking out the window. He saw a short girl with short hair walk away quickly. He frowned as he looked through the curtains. He rubbed his eyes. "Maybe I'm just tired" he told himself as he laid down on his bed and slowly fell asleep.
