Eliza"Is he always like that?" I asked the strange priest. I'd been on the run for most of my life and I'd seen a ton of strange things in that time, but these two idiots took the cake. First, a guy with a sword meets me in a subway and takes on the emo biker gang that had been tailing me for the past few blocks, and then the next thing I know I was throwing my guts up in a freaking church! I'm not sure, but I think that was a sign of the devil.
"He has his good and bad days," the priest, Nathan, answered with a sigh after his friend had left the building. "It's been sort of a long day."
"Tell me about it," I groaned. I'd thought my life had been weird up until now, but today had just made it a lot worse. "Why'd he get all tightened up when I called him an angel? I thought that would be a complement, especially seeing how much of an ass he is."
"Yeah, you'd think that," Nathan said, scratching his chin. "He's not as bad as he plays. If you ask me, his only real crime is caring too much."
"What, that guy?" I asked, wondering if we were still talking about the dick that had just left the room. "I'm having a hard time believing that."
"He acts all tough, but he's really just one big softy," Nathan said with a smile. "You just have to get past all the crap to find it."
"Not sure I'm willing to put that much work in," I answered, stretching my tired muscles. I stood and looked at the exit. Nathan must have followed my gaze.
"You don't want to leave just yet."
"Look, thanks for all your help and all that. But I'm better off on my own."
"Believe me, you're not," Nathan said, suddenly becoming serious. "You're being hunted. Both sides want you, and they won't stop until you are carrying one banner or the other."
"I've already told you I didn't volunteer for any war."
"As Gavin so eloquently put, it's not your choice," Nathan said with a pitying smile He looked up at the altar with a wistful look on his face. "It sucks, but that's just the way the world works."
"You can't be so pessimistic," I replied, making for the exit. I pushed on the giant wooden door, but it didn't even budge. "What the hell?"
"I told you I was good at sealing things," Nathan called from behind me. I looked back at the priest. He hadn't moved, but I could see a shimmering blue glow surrounding his body. I looked back at the door and saw that the same blue cloud had surrounded it too! I looked down at my own hand and called up my flames. They were the same exact color as the cloud
"So I guess you are like me," I said, having no choice but to believe it now that I'd seen it with my own eyes. "So what do I gotta do before I can get out of here?"
"It's not a matter of what you have to do," Nathan replied, standing and walking to me. "It's just a matter of time. Night is the worst time for people like us to be out. The dark is the dominion of the demons. Once the sun comes out, it will be safer."
"So what you're saying is that I'm stuck here for the night," I shrugged and looked around. "Well, what should we do until morning? Fool around?"
"As much as I'd like to," the priest chuckled. "I'm afraid I can't. These habits aren't just a fashion statement."
"I never got that. I don't know how anyone can just give up sex."
