A rock skidded against the summer pavement, once again coming into contact with Connors foot as they approached the orchard. An uncomfortable silence surrounded the two as they walked, desperate to break it, Connor asked, "What flavor did you get."
Evan startled a bit, tearing his gaze away from Connor's, feeling inferior under his watch. "..p-pistachio." The taller boy narrowed his eyes. "Gross, let me try." Before he could comprehend what was happening, Connor had grabbed his wrist, holding it in place before brushing some hair out of his eyes and literally biting a part of the ice cream like the edgelord he is.
He pulled away as if nothing had happened, but Evan stared at his ice cream with his face glowing red. He bit back an embarrassed smile, discreetly pulling his phone out of his pocket and texting Jared.

Glad I could helpEvan pocketed his phone with a sigh, earning the unwanted attention of he boy next to him. "You good?" Giving a shaky thumbs up, he smiled crookedly in response. Connor silently celebrated when the orchard came into view.
Quickly eating the rest of his cone, an unregularly seen smile tugged on his lips as he raced towards the orchard, throwing an "I'll race ya, Hansen," over his shoulder. Evan startled a bit, surprised to see a playful side of Connor for once but complying anyway and jogging towards him.
By the time he had reached the taller boy, he was panting a bit while staring up at the tree in awe. Connor flicked his forehead playfully, muttering 'slowpoke' under his breath but loud enough so that Evan could hear. "That's not fair, y-you're like, 90- 90 percent legs!"
Connor laughed a bit, like a real laugh, despite the fact it was raspy and a bit dry it was genuine none the less. It made Evans's heart skip a beat and caused a dopey grin to form on his face. Connor whipped around to fixate his attention back on the tree, completely ignoring the others lovesick expression.
It didn't take long before he took hold of one limb, pulling himself up on that branch before continuing onto the next, climb higher and higher. Evan shook his head back and fourth, chuckling softly. This was a completely different person. He followed suit in the others actions, using his upper arm strength and hesitantly maneuvering himself up the tree until reaching a branch near Connor's.
The taller boy rubbed a strand of his hair between his fingers, looking at Evan with a content smile. Evan felt his face flush a bit, tearing his gaze back to the evening sky before speaking. "D-Do I have something on my- on my face?"
"No you're just kinda cute or something." He simpered bluntly, lazily resting his cheek against his hand and allowing his eyelids to droop a bit. Evan sputtered, barely noticing that Connor had called his name, his eyes widened in fear as he reached his hand out for Evan to take.
"Wha-" He didn't get to finish his thought before hearing a loud snap, finding himself free-falling to the ground. Connor might have been calling out for him, though it was hard to tell. All he could hear was the wind rushing past his ears before a loud, sickening crack filled the air. His breath hitched, seeing the silhouette of Connor scrambling down the tree and speeding towards him with tears in his eyes.
"Connor what the fuck did you do?" He heard a shrill voice call in the distance, instantly recognizing at Zoe. A pair of arms wrapped around him and gently cradled him as if he could break at any moment, Connor didn't bother replying, instead telling her to get her car started. She narrowed her eyes at him in response, clenching her jaw and wanting to argue back before reluctantly running towards her car.
The pain began to settle in. He muttered a string of curses as Connor awkwardly combed his fingers through his hair in an attempt to soothe him, carefully carrying him down the hill and getting in the backseat with him. He struggled to maintain his breathing the entire trip to the hospital.
Zoe and Connor wouldn't stop bickering, which only made Evans anxiety worse. When things got especially heated and Connor began threatening her he groaned loudly. "Shut up, just shhh, shut your fucks up." The siblings blinked a few times, staring at Evan as he drowsily rubbed his temples and furrowed his brow.

"Evan?" Heidi called, mortified to see her son in such a state. He waved back, struggling to keep himself awake. Connor watched as doctors whisked him away. Out of the corner of his eyes Zoe fidgeted with her hands, having an internal debate on whether or not to comfort him. He waited too, seeing if she'd try to do something.
She just sighed, taking a seat on one of the plastic chairs before burying her face in a magazine. He sat a few chairs away from her, nervously picking at his nails and keeping his focus directed on the clock in the room.

A nurse who he recognized as Evans mom stepped out with a clipboard and began walking towards him. "Connor?" He hummed in response. He had become a regular at this hospital, and this certainly wasn't their first encounter. "Evans asking to see you?" She said softly, running her hand over the back of her clipboard and waiting for a response.
He bit back a smile, standing up before taking one quick look at Zoe, she had fallen asleep. The nurse weaved through the many doctors and patients, making sure Connor kept close behind her. She led the teen into a room near the end of the hall, gesturing towards one of the beds before exiting.
"Evan?" The anxious boy looked up at his name being called, smiling a bit upon seeing Connor. "O-oh, Hey C-Connor." He waved a bit, taking a seat next to the hospital bed. "I-I'm sorry for running our ,uhm, h-hang out? Whatever, sorry, I-"
"Can I sign your cast?" Evan paused a bit, sheepishly nodding his head in slight confusion. Connor pulled out a sharpie from his sweatshirt pocket that he randomly has for whatever reason, holding the others arm still while writing 'CONNOR' in big sloppy letters.
"There," he smiled a bit, "now we can both pretend that we have friends."
Evan picked at the cast a bit, "Or we- we can just b-be friends.."
Connor startled for a moment, smiling softly to himself and pumping his fist in the air when Eva wasn't looking. "Yeah, that too."
I wish I wrote this better aaaah also I kind of changed Connors personality halfway through this without noticing it :,)
