Rio woke up to someone shaking her arm. "Get up, stick! I know Kaylee told you to take a nap, but Harriet will have my head it I let you sleep all day!" It was Amelia. Rio sat up, and then immediately grabbed the sides of her hammock as it swayed. "How long was I out?" She asked Amelia. Amelia looked around, and said the rest of yesterday, all night, and I would assume about two hours into the morn." Rio sighed. Her back still ached, and she felt like she had only slept a few minutes. She finally swung her legs out of her hammock and silently followed Amelia to wherever they were headed next.

Amelia stopped at the front of one of the smallest shacks, and motioned for Rio to go in. "This," Amelia said, "Is the healer's shack. Teach ya how to fix a broken bone, patch up skin wounds." Rio nodded and stepped in. Three girls sat in the center of the shack talking, and they all looked up as Rio came in. One of them smiled and said "Heard you were payin' a visit, First-Timer! Come sit down." She patted the ground next to her, and Rio obliged. They introduced themselves, and Rio learned that the tall girl with brown hair was named Mary, the girl with piercing hazel eyes was Marc, and the black-haired girl was named Grace. They spent the next few hours demonstrating how to splint a leg broken in multiple places, stitch a wound, and how to clean a shallower wound. After the demonstrations, they let Rio practice splinting their legs and sewing on a piece of tightly-woven grass. Rio's stomach rumbled, and Marc laughed. "Go get some food. You look like a piece of scat." Rio smiled, and said "Thanks," she thought about it, and added a quick "stick" to her sentence. They all laughed, and Rio felt at home for the first time she could remember.

Rio looked around for Amelia, and she appeared as if she had been summoned. Rio jumped in surprise, and they both laughed at her reaction. "Umm..." Rio said. "I'm hungry. Is there any food?" Amelia smiled. "Of course! Rosa and Bea would be happy to cook. Amelia guided her to a little area right next to the forest that was covered in woven grass mats. There were tons of knives, crude pots, pans, and other things piled in the center of the small clearing. There was a fire surrounded by heavy-looking stones off to the side, and two girls stood over it cooking something. Rio looked closer, and discovered that they were cooking large strips of meat, using long sticks to keep themselves away from the fire. Each stick had about five strips of meat on it. Amelia called out "Bea! Rosa! Our new First-Timer wants some food!" The taller of the two grinned and walked over to them, her long snow-white hair swishing behind her. She stopped in the middle of the clearing, took two plates out of the middle of the pile, and put a meat strip on both of them. She then took something out of a little bowl Rio hadn't noticed before a scooped some onto each plate. Amelia and Rio walked over to her, and she silently handed Amelia both plates. She then walked back over to the fire to help her friend. Amelia smiled. "Bea doesn't talk much, but she does cook some mighty good food!" Amelia handed Rio a plate, and she saw that the food se didn't notice before was actually mashed potatoes. The both sat down, legs crossed, and dug in.

"So," Rio asked Amelia. "How long have you guys been here?" Amelia shrugged. "We don't count the years. We've learned that counting makes the days go slower." Rio nodded, and then pointed to the walls. "What's out there?" Amelia grimaced and said "The Labyrinth. It's also known as our only way out of here. Every day," she said as she pointed to a group of girls "the Mappers go out and map it. It changes every night. You might not have noticed, since you were asleep before the doors closed, but they close every night at sunset and open every morning. The Mappers always have to get back before sunset." Amelia paused to let Rio take in this information. Rio gazed back out at the Labyrinth and asked "Why don't they just stay in there when the doors close? Bring some food and water and keep exploring?" Amelia signed. "You really don't know a scat thing, do you stick? There are monsters out there, First-Timer. Big ones. Don't have right proper names, but we call them Snatchers." Rio's eyes widened, and she said "What do they do to you?" "They take ya, stick. Dunno what they do to ya after. Only come out at night though. If you're unlucky enough to meet one in broad daylight, you get stung." Amelia, done with her food by now, stood up. "Enough questions for a day, eh stick? Go to the hammers for your next job." She motioned toward a couple of girls building something off in the corner, and Rio started towards them.
