sorry this chapter is shorter, i felt bad for not updating for 3 weeks uhh enjoy
also doing a song of the chapter so this one is (forgive the fact I had no idea for this chapter song oops)- Kids by MGMT
I was surprisingly comforted by the warm smile from... uhhh... I looked around for a name tag anywhere and spotted a gold plaque sitting on her desk. Evelyn Rose, Headmaster.
"Our particular flavor of magic here at Meladem may not be what you're thinking of. We rely on our natural ties to the world, focusing on the elements. We'll do a few tests to find your areas of focus after the first school week, once you get accustomed to the academy. Let's get you to a temporary room, and we'll send an upperclassman at around 6 to bring you to the dining hall for dinner."
Apparently, my confusion at the apparent time skip was obvious, as the woman gave me a kind smile and pointed to a clock behind her which read 3:26 PM.
"Travel here can last longer than it feels. It can take some getting used to. Now, if you walk outside, Chloe will take you to your temporary room. Your items should be there." She offered a quick smile, stood, and waved me to the door. I opened the door to see the smiling girl from my arrival. As I stepped out of the office, Chloe grabbed me by the arm and started guiding me towards the front of the building.
"I'm so happy you've arrived at Meladem! I love it here, and I think I have some grounds to say that as it is my 4th year. Anyways, I know that you'll find great people here!" She spoke so quickly that I struggled to keep up with her words as she led me to the front door. She turned to face me and let go of my arm.
"The hallway to my left will lead you to most of our main classrooms, though some of them are hard to find at first since you have to go down more side hallways. The door at the end of the hallway will lead to a courtyard, and on the other side is the Dining Hall and the gym. Down the hallway we came from is mostly just offices, though the library is near the end of the hall. It's massive, you should check it out." She pointed out what she could as she said it. "Upstairs is all of the element dorms, which is where you'll live once you get assigned. To the right is all of the various student resources, like the nurse and such. There are some teacher dorms, though many of them live in cottages behind the school. We also put the first year temporary dormitories in there, though after the first week they're used as extra rooms to use as needed."
Chloe started walking down the right hallway, and after a moment to process what she told me, I took off after her. Though she was a bit shorter than me, she seemed to have the legs of someone twice my size as she walked down the hallway. As I caught up, we turned into a smaller hallway and were greeted by a pale, lanky boy stumbling after a girl with short teal hair running away from him, carrying a small journal.
"Come back here coward! I know where you sleep!" The boy's voice had a strange lilt and it took me a moment to realize that he had a British accent.
"So do I, Oakley!" The smiling girl turned around and caught sight of Chloe and I standing in the hallway. She froze, as did Oakley, and the various observers quickly hurried back to their rooms.
"Relax, I really don't care what you're doing as long as it doesn't get me into trouble. I do need you to move though, I gotta get to room 136," Chloe smiled. The two teens unfroze as smiles broke onto their faces.
"136? Come on in, roomie. I'm Oakley, that bully and coward right there that stole my private journal is Aurora." The British boy offered his hand and I shook it. Aurora laughed and waved to me.
"In that case, you can show Rhea to her room. Have fun, freshie." Chloe gave me a smirk as she waved and walked back down the hallway before calling out, "See you at 6 for dinner!" I turned back to my new roommates, both of which were barely holding in laughs. They led me into a bare dorm room filled with three beds, three closets, and a shit ton of bags. I found my name on the top of a pile of suitcases and boxes, some of which looked like they had been taken directly from my room.
"We already took two of the beds, but if you really want the one by the window for some reason, I can switch. I don't really have a preference." Aurora vaguely gestured at the beds when she spoke, but I shrugged.
"We're only in this room for a week, I don't care that much anyways." I started going through my stuff as an awkward silence blanketed the room. It dawned on me that I probably should've somehow introduced myself, but I was already unpacking and it could be weird if I started talking now, right? And besides, why would they care, we're only roommates for a week and I'm some random girl that's not even that interesting so why would I even start to talk about-
"Your name is Rhea, right?" The yellow-haired boy's voice cut through my thoughts. I took a breath and turned around, smiling.
"Yep." I rocked back and forth on my feet a bit, not really knowing how to continue the conversation. I think that Oakley caught on to my struggle, and took the opportunity to speak.
"Well, since we're gonna be stuck together for a week, we should all get to know each other. I'm from London, what about you two?"
"Well originally I'm from New York City, but I just moved to Austin when I ended up here." I looked up at Aurora, waiting for her to speak.
"I'm from all over, really. My family moves a lot, but I was born in DC." She took out the earbuds that she must've put in while I was unpacking, and looked at us expectantly. When we both turned to look at Oakley to continue the conversation, it was as if he started glowing.
"How about we play Two Truths and a Lie? It'll be an easy way to get to know each other, and we can kill time until dinner." I shrugged, as did Aurora, which Oakley took as a yes from both of us.
After several rounds and some interesting revelations about my roommates, including Oakley's apparent obsession with musicals and Aurora's strong opinions on astrology(don't even get her started on her apparent hatred of all Leos), the conversation turned away from mundane facts and towards the weird situation we were in.
"So, do either of you actually know anything about Meladem or magic? Until about three hours ago I didn't know it existed," I asked. Oakley's face morphed into an expression I couldn't quite decipher.
"I'm from a magic family. There aren't many, seeing as magic isn't exactly consistent with who gets it, but I grew up surrounded by it. My family has gone to this school for generations, but they haven't told me much." I blinked at him, surprised. I assumed everyone came into Meladem completely blind, but that was a dumb assumption to make.
"Do you know how the magic works? The headmaster wasn't exactly clear," Aurora asked, "I'd like to know something about what I'm getting myself into here."
"I don't know that much about specifics, but everyone is connected with specific elements. There are four tiers of them, and in order to have a higher tier, you must have one from each below. I don't really know why, but that's how it be sometimes. The tier one elements are water, earth, fire, and air, but I don't know the higher tier elements." Oakley paused as he tried to remember the other elements. "Whatever, you'll learn them in class and when you find out your elements. When you do, you'll also get a power ranking. Some people are born with more magical capabilities than others, and it's ranked on a one to seven scale. Most people average around four."
I nodded as if I understood, because I'm not one to admit defeat, but I had genuinely no idea what he was talking about. Thankfully, I was cut off from having to continue the conversation like I knew what I was talking about as we heard a knock on our door and Chloe's voice calling to come out and follow her to the dining hall, or be left to find it ourselves. We scrambled out of the room and headed to dinner.
