Chapter 8

"You're acting like such a f*cking girl, Ethan. Just pick a damn shirt." Spencer yelled, throwing his hands up in the air in frustration.
I rolled my eyes and tried not to laugh at his annoyance. I made him sit on my bed as I modeled possible outfits for tonight. After the first outfit, he threw a fit.
I looked at my body length mirror once more. My khaki's hung low on my hips, showing an inch of my navy boxers, even though I was wearing a belt. My blue button up shirt was rolled up to my elbow and the first two buttons were undone, showing the white tee underneath.
"I like this one." I said. I already knew that I was going to pick it but getting him mad was payback for what he did yesterday morning.
"Yes!" he said and bolted up from my bed. "I'm out of here. Have fun tonight and don't forget to tell me what happens. See ya!"
Once he shut my bedroom door, I cleaned the lenses of my glasses. I put it on before slipping into a pair of Sperrys. As I made way downstairs to my car, I called my mom.
"Ethan?" she answered. "You're not canceling dinner, are you?"
I gulped. I haven't told my family that I was bringing a guest. It wasn't cause I was embarrassed of Anastasia, it was because I've never brought anyone over for the weekly family dinner before. Especially a girl.
"Er... No, mom. I'm coming."
"Good! So why did you call then? Are you going to be late?"
I sat quietly in my car, thinking of ways to tell her that her son was bringing home a girl for the first time in his life.
"Hello? Are you still there, Ethan?" my mom said when I didn't respond.
"Sorry. Yeah, I'm still here."
"What's wrong, honey?"
Now how do I say this? The best way is to just blurt it out. Be straight up.
"I'm bringing a girl with me." I blurted out.
My mother was silent for the longest time that I actually thought she had fainted from what I said but then she screamed bloody murder and I had to hold the phone away from my ear.
"Mom, calm down please." I tried to say but she kept on screaming.
"Richard! Richard!" she was shouting. I could hear my father's muffled words in the background. "Ethan is bringing a girl to our dinner! A girl! Can you believe it?! He's not gay!"
Gay? What the f-- I'm not gay!
"Mom, I am not gay!" she didn't hear me.
"Is this real life?" she was saying. "Oh dear God, this is a miracle."
I didn't know whether to roll my eyes, get mad, or cry at the fact that my mother thought I was gay and that the news of me being with a girl is about to make her cry.
"Mom--"
"What's her name? Is she pretty? I don't even care if she's not attractive because she's a girl!" I smiled at that. They were all going to freak when they see how gorgeous she is.
"Oh my God, dinner!" she was rattling off on the other line. "You should have told me sooner, Ethan Scott Fitz, then I would've prepared something more than just fried chicken and spaghetti! Richard, put some damn pants on. No, no, no! Shower first then put pants on! Oh, dear it's chaos over here. Ethan, honey, I've got to go and fix things here before you arrive. I'm so excited, I'm about to burst! I'll see you soon, love you!"
