"Have a blessed day at school!" our mother bid us goodbye. It was the first day of polytechnic and I couldn't wait to meet new people. However, my face didn't quite exactly show any excitement. Why? I was known to have the worst resting face in my family.
When I was five years old, I received my first ever 'Totally Spies' doll set. I enjoyed playing with it but my reaction wasn't clear so my mother, being the "miss-i-know-it-all", decided to sell it off on eBay - without my permission! I cried for weeks. Nevertheless, I got over it.
"Beep, beep!" the bus honked as it came to a stop. It was signalling to a girl on her phone - Devon. She was wearing her favourite navy blue top with a tiny anchor the left part of her chest paired with grey sweatpants. She was the first ever friend I made in this neighbourhood. And finding out I would be schooling with her filled me with excitement.
"How's my favourite twin?" Devon asked as she smirked in my direction.
"Good!" Fyn and I said, in unison. Fyn was my younger twin brother - yes, I was born 10 minutes before him.
"Shut up, Bree! Devon looked in my direction," Fyn argued.
"I'm pretty sure she was referring to me," I rolled my eyes at him. Devon was in her graduating year. In all honesty, I never would have expected to be close with people her age. On the other hand, my parents did constantly remind me that age should never matter in friendships.
As we reached Far Eastern Polytechnic, I realised Fyn fell asleep.
"Wake up, ya weirdo," I playfully smacked his arm and he shook his head to acknowledge that he was up.
"Well, have a great first day! I have a council meeting to get to. Let me know when you need anything. Text me, okay?" Devon said with a smile, hugging both Fyn and I afterwards. She could honestly be our older sister already.
I walked through the hallways of Far Eastern Polytechnic, admiring their colourful lockers and friendly teachers that greeted us as they passed by. I'm pretty sure I'll have a great 3 years here.
"Hey Bree, my first lesson is starting soon so I'll go ahead. Would you be fine on your own?" Fyn asked with his right eyebrow raised.
"Uh, yeah. I guess I should be fine. Mine's starting soon too and lecture hall's just around the corner." I smiled, trying to reassure him. Fyn being himself, he ruffled my nicely combed hair and made it frizzier than ever. I slapped his hand away, turned around and proceeded to my first period of the day.
Fortunately, I arrived at the lecture hall on time. Lucky, because, knowing myself, I am terrible at navigating and following directions. I settled on an empty seat next to a boy who seemed nervous. Not surprised since it's the first day. However, he was constantly shaking his right knee, which had his keys dangling from the right pocket. Annoyed by the shaking and the noise, I decided to talk to him.
"Hey, are you alright?" I questioned him. He stared back at me with confusion but looked away right after.
"Yea, I'm talking to you", I nudged him and he finally gave in.
"Hi, um yes?" he had that friendly yet constipated look on his face.
"So you're good?"
"Yea, I'm better now," with that response, he finally stopped shaking his knee. I sighed in relief as I no longer had to hear his keys jingle. Right after he stopped, a teacher came into the lecture hall.
During class, I met Kayla. She had hazelnut brown eyes, short wavy black hair and was taller than me - by around 4cm. We found out that we had the same modules for the same course, Film and Photography. We started walking to our next class as we got out of the restroom.
