CHAPTER 4

I couldn't help it, I laughed. I laughed so hard tears started pouring out of my eyes, my stomach was hurting and I actually fell off the couch. When my laugh finally dissolved into giggles I sat up on the floor and looked at David.

"Ok, that was fun, but seriously, what's going on?" That's when I noticed that no one else was smiling. They all were looking at me seriously, not a hint of humor or even amusement in their eyes.

"I told ya." Kayla muttered to the boys. I just sat there looking at them for a full minute, waiting for their expressions to change and someone to scream 'gotcha!'. Yeah, didn't happen.

"You can't be serious? A mage? As in a witch?"

"Actually mages and witches are quite different but if you are referring to the fact that they use magic, then yes, you are kind of like a witch."

Ok, if I needed further proof that they were completely insane, I just got it. Now I definitely needed to get out of there.

"Ummm, okay. Thanks for everything, really, but I have to go." I got up and started to walk to the door.

"You can see it in your eyes." It was Beau. I froze. "Ever wondered why they were so different? I bet you've never seen eyes like that before. At least not until now."

I turned around hesitatingly, with my eyes narrowed. "Do explain."

He grinned slowly, and then looked at David, who drew out a long stick; a wand. With a flick of his wrist a small oval mirror with a golden frame appeared in his other hand. I gasped. He came to me and handed me the mirror. I turned it in my hands, making sure it was real. Well, it felt real, it was solid and it reflected me. Me and my eyes. I lifted the mirror and looked at the image portrayed there. My eyes were normal, well kind of, but hey at least they didn't have a slit pupil! The only bizarre thing about them was the color. They were dark blue in the center, around the pupil, but as they reached the edges it faded into a deep violet. He was right; I've never seen eyes like mine or like theirs before. The doctors couldn't really explain it; they said it was a strange but wonderful occurrence.

"It marks you as one of us." I jumped, Beau was suddenly right behind me and I could see one of his black eyes in the mirror. Our eyes were so different and yet so alike, so unique in their own that they were exactly the same. I lowered the mirror, but didn't turn around.

"One of us? You mean a mage?" All the humor was gone from my voice, but I was still skeptic about all of this. I mean, there had to be a much more rational explanation to all of our eyes, even to Kayla and Sean's slit ones.

"Not exactly. Though you are a mage, the rest of us aren't. However, we all have one thing in common: magic. We are all magical creatures, creatures from fary tales, movies, myths, books, nightmares..."

"That's impossible, those creatures only exist in fiction, in dreams-"

"Are you sure? Cuz you were captured by some of those creatures last night and then rescued by some others to whom you're currently speaking." Beau was giving me an amused superior look, one that made me want to throw the mirror at him. But maybe, just maybe he was right...

"So if you guys aren't mages, what are you exactly?" I remembered that last night Beau had seemed to grow wings, "Do you all have wings? Are you angels or something?"

Chase snorted and smiled "Hardly, we're too mischievous for that!"

"But you do all have wings?"

"No," Sean came forward "we're all different species. I'm a dragon, a white dragon." He paused and thought for a moment, "Huh, I guess that means I do have wings."

"A dragon? You look pretty human to me." I frowned, trying to see if he had scales or something. Then I remembered his eyes, ice blue surrounding a slit pupil.

He smiled, "Dragons are like shapeshifters, we have a human appearance -except for our eyes- and whenever we wish to, we can change into our dragon form. We even get to spit fire."

"I, on the other hand, am a real shapeshifter." Chase continued, stretching on one of the arm chairs. "In case you're wondering, yes, I can change into any form. As long as it's animal, off course."

Kayla, who was leaning on the far wall behind Chase, raised her hand "Feline, or catwoman as they usually call us." When we all kept staring at her she added, "Well the name's pretty self explanatory, so no need to elaborate."

Abby, who had moved to stand next to David, seemed to be next, "I'm a sorceress. I have the power to interpret, control and use in any way any magical object."

"I'm a wizard, I have magic but require a wand to channel it". David said, looking intently at me.

Everyone was quiet once again and I turned around to look at Beau, "So what are you?"

"He's a crossbreed" answered Chase, though I wasn't talking to him.

Beau scowled at him, "Mules are crossbreeds" he said between gritted teeth, "I'm a hybrid."

"A hybrid?"

"Yes, a hybrid, an offspring from two different-"

"I know what a hybrid is, but what hybrid are-"

Beau rolled his eyes. "I'm half avir -a part bird human- and half vampire."

To illustrate what he meant, he extended his wings. They were just magnificent. Sixteen feet large, with strong muscles and bones covered with soft black feathers. The wings catched the light from the room and reflected it in different shades of blue, purple and silver. He looked so powerful, beautiful and perfect. I gawked at him, and he gave me an incredibly conceited look. He grinned, a wide confident grin. Abruptly he flashed fangs -fangs!- and I jumped back startled, which only made him smile more. Right, I had forgotten he was part vampire too. It was creepy. He looked like a fallen angel, with his dark looks, cocky attitude and fangs. Though I must admit, he looked really sexy. I blushed at that thought and quickly looked away.

"Do you believe us now?" he asked, looking at me through half closed eyes. How could I not believe them when I was seeing it with my own eyes.

"Yes." I whispered. I took a deep breath, "So, what's this about another dimension?"
