“Huuuuoooouaaahaa” my hand continuously covered my mouth every few minutes as I yawned. “I’m so tired…” I groaned.

“Says the girl who slept almost the entire day,” pa peeked into the rear view mirror, chuckling at me. Driving out to the supermarket always felt like forever! I mean, why couldn’t we just shop in town like normal people do?

“AH!!” I jumped out of my seat, completely startled by the sound of a car horn going off. “PA!! WHY DID YOU DO THAT? I ALMOST DIED OF A HEART ATTACK!!”

“Hahaha, Marie… your face is priceless, my little drama queen. WE’RE HERE, SO STOP YOUR SNOOZIN!!” he choked while he tried to hold his laughter back. I just glared at him while getting out of the car. Oi.

Every time we came to this supermarket I felt like I was visiting the old west where cowboys have gun fights and get into bar fights… Well, maybe not so much like that but the structure of the building at least.

“I’m gonna go look in the gift shop for a bit pa…” you could hear the enthusiasm in my voice, not. Before he could even reply I was already headed for the tiny store next to the market.

“Alright, meet back at the car in half an hour!” were the last words I heard before the door shut behind me.

Even the smell in these buildings was old and musty. But the amount of gifts they had made up for it. Hand-made gifts from all over England sat on shelves; some items were even shipped from overseas, ones made in other countries. Usually I would only take a gander but I had a lot of spare money on me so I thought it would be nice to buy a gift for my nana since I was such a disappointment to her earlier on. She’d like that.

CLASH! – The clerk ran out from the back room only to see a broken mess on the wooden floor.

“HEY! KID… IF YOU’RE GONNA BREAK THINGS THEN YOU CAN LEAVE MY STORE!!” she was furious, yelling at the young boy who knocked an antique over.

“Uhhmm, ma’am… I’m sorry! Uhhh honestly, it was an accident… I will pay for the damage…” he bit his lip, hoping she would forgive him.

“Do I have to call the cops?! – You wouldn’t even be able to afford this if you sold your own life – “her fist was up in the air like she wanted to hit something… or someone. She’s gone mad!

“Miss, excuse me! Could you help me over here? I –“I asked trying to cover for the poor lad.

“Young girl, can’t you see I’m busy here?! Go find your daddy, he can help you!” Judging from the look on her face, you think this lady must have picked up mad cow disease.

“You know, that’s very poor customer service… I can have you reported! I may be young but you’ve got no right to treat me that way…” I tilted my head and crossed my arms. This just got serious.

Swallowing her pride, she gave in and apologized to me.

“Ahem,” I glanced in the boy’s direction.

“And I’m sorry for losing my temper at you…” she hesitated.

“Go on,” I demanded.

“You don’t have to pay for any damage; we all have accidents…” her voice croaked like she had a frog stuck in her throat. “Carry on with your day, sir.” She turned back to me, “and you?”

I shook my head. “Nah, I’m good, thank you.”

She stood there for a minute, glaring at me, than quickly paced back into her “bat cave”.

“Uhm… thanks for that! You really saved my butt!” the pubescent boy stood behind me, awkwardly gratifying me.

“It’s no problem at all,” I hesitated to look at him. He might scream and run away if I did acknowledge him.

I could feel his stares on my back, hoping he would just accept that and walk away. But when I turned around, he was still standing there staring at me. His brown locks of hair were going every which way, complimenting his baby-like face. He smiled at me, squinting with those sprightly green eyes, and showing his dimples. Girls always go crazy over dimples, what’s so great about them anyway? They look like someone poked that one spot one too many times and it stayed that way…

“Uhh... You alright?” he observed me closely, bringing his face closer to mine, which brought me back to reality.

“Ahh, uhh yeah… sorry,” my eyes were staring at the ground as I hung my head, then I smirked. “Don’t go breaking more things, okay? Don’t need that lady going mental on your a-“

His hand instantly found its way to my mouth, sealing it with his palm. “You’re cute when you smile like that.” He smirked back at me.

My eyes grew wide, and I tried so hard not to look at him. I didn’t know what to say back so instead I just nodded and then headed for the door. “uhh, BYE!”

“Wait... where are you – “but before he could finish, the door had closed.

I ran to the car quickly, which my pa had been waiting in, and buckled up not looking back. As we pulled out of the parking spot, I noticed the boy run outside from my peripheral vision. He looked distraught, searching the parking lot for me.

And that was the last time I ever saw him.
