Adeline woke up to the sound of her alarm going off repetitively. She sat up groaning, whacking the button on top of the alarm to shut it off. She had been sleeping off an on the entire night. The one night she needed to get a bunch of sleep, she barely got any. But she hasn't been getting much sleep anyways for the past week ever since Miles had killed himself.
The funeral was three days ago, and it sucked. Adeline didn't want to even continue with the move to California, but she knew that's not what he would want her to do.
Adeline was getting ready to move to a performing arts boarding school in Los Angeles, California. Her and Miles had been planning this ever since they were Freshmen. They both got accepted into the school for their Senior Year in High School.
The way the school works, is they only have all of the same grade at the same time. The whole school are Freshmen, the next year the whole school are Sophomores, then as you can guess after Juniors, then Seniors. If you didn't start when the school started with Freshmen, you have chances to come in and join different years. Sometimes people will come for one year, then leave. When more people leave, there are more openings. But it's the opposite of easy getting into the third most best performing arts school in America.
Adeline and Miles tried applying for sophomore year, they had five slots opened, but neither of them got accepted. Then for junior year, Miles got accepted and Adeline didn't. He told her he wasn't going if she couldn't. They only had the one slot opened.
But Miles and Adeline had faith for their senior year, and they both got accepted. But a week before the move, Miles committed suicide. And now it's just Adeline, all by herself.
Adeline started walking down the steps that opened into the kitchen and living room. Her whole family was awake, her dad and siblings in the living room, and her mom in the kitchen making breakfast.
"Why are you guys awake?" she yawned and sat on the counter barstool.
"Did you think we would miss you leaving?" her mother, who's name is Jane, smiled and ran her hand down Adeline's cheek before going back to the scrambled eggs."I mean, I guess not. I just figured I would wake you up before I left. It's 4:15. Disgustingly early."
"Oh I know love, but it's our last breakfast together!" she had one hand on her waist and the other holding the spatula.
"Mom, I'm gonna be coming back to visit and stuff." Adeline was only going to be gone for a year. She'll most likely come back for Christmas break which is in four months, not to mention Thanksgiving break which is in three. But California was far. The farthest place she's gone to, only place she's gone to was New York, they live in Wisconsin. It was just for a weekend, with Miles.
"I know! But it'll just be weird not having you around." Jane started to plate the eggs.
Her dad, Henry walked into the kitchen with his now empty coffee mug, and grabbed the lukewarm coffee pot to pour himself some more. He came up to Adeline and kissed her head, "Gonna miss you kiddo."
Jane turned and gave Henry /the eyes./ "Henry.. what did we talk about." She said quietly, which there was no point because Adeline was in the middle of them.
"Kiddo, again dad? I'm fine." Adeline said with a sigh. Her dad has been calling her 'kiddo' ever since Miles had died. It's only been a week but it was a lot of 'kiddos', almost every sentence.
"I'm sorry! I'm done, I swear. It's almost a reflex okay. No more, I promise." He dragged his thumb and index finger across his lips, acting like it was a zipper. He went back to the recliner chair he was sitting in, while reading sports articles on his iPad.
"I told him to stop I swear." Jane said sincerely, she finished plating the rest of the food.
"It's fine mom.." I got a mug and poured myself some coffee.
