Chapter Eleven.
*************

The distant sound of knuckles wrapping on wood dragged me out of whatever half-sleep I'd been floating in.

I groaned, rolled over, and yanked the thick blanket over my head.

Marie was in the apartment somewhere. She could deal with whoever was at the front door.

Another knock.

Then my bedroom door creaked open.

A single, sharp bark echoed in the room.

Spike.

"Get Marie to open it." I mumbled, barely awake.

The blanket was suddenly yanked away from me.

Spike stood there, gripping the edge in his teeth, dragging it toward the door. He dropped it, then fixed me with a stare, tail wagging hard enough to shake his whole backside. The dog took up half my room, looming like a judgmental furry bouncer.

We stared at each other.

I guess Marie isn't home then.

Spike tilted his head and let out another sharp bark.

I sighed, grabbed my crutches, and hobbled toward the front door as the loud incessant banging continued.

I unlocked the door and yanked it open with more force than necessary. The person on the other side jumped.

River.

His hair was slightly damp, fresh out of the shower I assumed by the looks of it, and he was dressed in black joggers, a fitted charcoal long-sleeve athletic top that clung to his shoulders, and clean sneakers. Was he going to the gym or something?

Meanwhile I was standing there in an oversized T-shirt, baggy sweatpants, and a singular sock on my good foot.

"Hey, Peach." He said softly, like raising his voice might crack me open all over again.

Spike bolted past me to greet him, tail smacking my leg like a weapon as River reached down and gave him a scratch behind his ear.

"What do you want?" I muttered, leaning on my crutches as I glanced past him down the hallway, half-expecting Caleb or Marie or the whole damn circus to be lurking behind him.

But it was just River. Alone.

"You need to get out of this apartment," He said, "Come on. We're going on a walk."

Spike heard the word walk and immediately lost his mind.
He launched into frantic circles, tail helicoptering, letting out these high-pitched, unhinged yip-barks that rattled down the hallway. His big body crashed around the tiny entryway like a wrecking ball with enthusiasm.
