“I really appreciate that you want to stay, but you should go to school, Cam.”

“I said I was staying. You never pay attention to anything the doctor says, and even if you do, you still don't follow any instructions.”

After fourteen years of friendship, Camille knew Madison like the back of her hand. Leaving the brunette alone in the hospital was the same as not bringing her at all.

“Alright...” Madison replied in a low voice, avoiding her friend's gaze. She didn't like to be scolded like a child, and she also hated that Camille was right.

They stayed in an uncomfortable silence, submerged in their own thoughts. The last four days have been quite awkward between them; Camille being hurt and angry and barely speaking to Madison just to know if she was okay, or to help her with homework since the brunette couldn't use her hand.

Madison knew what the problem was, but the thought of pressing charges against her dad wasn't an option for her. She knew she had to go back home the next day and to school in a few days, and she was terrified.

She remembered how John used to hit her mom when she was little, she recalled the pain in the woman's eyes but she still tried to stay still for Madison. She was barely six years old when her mom left, and she promised that John would never hurt her. He never did before, but when she was gone he blamed it all on the little girl.

“Hudson?” The male voice interrupted both girls from her thoughts, and Camille helped Madison to get up before they approached the room. “Come on in,” He motioned them to sit on the chairs, subtly inspecting Madison's face. “So, girls, what brings you here?”

“Well, my friend had an accident on her motorcycle, and I think she broke her arm or something.” Camille tried to sound as convincing as possible, but the doctor eyed them incredulously.

“Just broke her arm? By the color of the bruise on your eye I can tell it's been a few days already. When did the accident exactly happened?”

“Wednesday night.” Madison replied in a low voice. She hated hospitals so much. “I wasn't really in pain, I just took a few painkillers and went back to my routine.”

Camille had to stop herself from rolling her eyes, and saw how the doctor got up with a penlight. “Follow the light.” He instructed. It took Madison a couple of seconds to get used to the light but she finally got used to the sensation.

Of course the doctor wasn't going to be fooled by two teenagers, but he kept professional and checked the bruised on her face before he actually moved to Madison's arm. After an x-ray, they confirmed that her arm was broken and she needed a plaster cast to heal. She didn't even remember how her arm got broken by her dad, and she's been dealing with a big amount of physical pain for days.

For her back, Madison could only apply some cream in the bruises and some ice, then just wait for it to heal itself.

In the pharmacy, Camille bought the prescribed pills for Madison's pain and the cream for her cuts and bruises, then went back to her friend that was waiting for the doctor to call her again and finally put on the plaster.

“Thanks for being here...” Madison said after some time of dead silence. Camille looked at her and slightly nodded.

“It’s okay. You always drive me everywhere, it's the last thing I could do.”

“I don't mean here, here... I mean, here with me, always. No matter what. I know you're mad right now but–”

“I could never be mad at you, Madison. I'll be always here for you, no matter what. I promise.” Camille took Madison's hand gently and stroke her palm softly. “I love you.” She said, almost out of breath.
