"hurry up! you'd think with how tall you are and how long your legs are you'd be faster!" "oh my god, shut up, you're on track team, chaeyoung!" jeongyeon panted as she sprinted as fast as she could to catch up with her friend. "who's idea was it to act a fool and go graffiti shit?" the tall girl called out ahead of her to chaeyoung. she could see chaeyoung look behind her and roll her eyes at the question. "you, asshole!" she called back.

jeongyeon grumbled as she continued her pace of straggling behind her friend. "how did they even see us?" she asked as she slumped down in front of the brick wall of some alleyway the pair of girls had weaseled themselves into while trying to avoid the police car who'd spotted them. "no clue..." chaeyoung responded, though the question was clearly rhetorical. "i wanna sleep," jeongyeon pouted "i have the shittiest ideas." chaeyoung hummed in agreement as she slumped next to her friend.

"do you have a ride?" jeongyeon asked the younger. "it's not a good idea to walk alone this late." chaeyoung snorted and nudged jeongyeon. "yeah, okay, mom," she mocked. "i'll be fine. my house is way closer than yours is anyways. do you have a ride?" jeongyeon thought to herself for a moment until she realized: no. she really didn't have somebody who would for sure be able to come pick her up. but she knew if she told chaeyoung that that she would never hear the end of it.

"yeah," jeongyeon lied blankly. "i've got a ride." chaeyoung nodded and stood up, dusting off her pants as she arose from the dirty cement. "well since you've got a ride, i'll get going if that's okay. stay safe, stupid." chaeyoung said before walking away and not letting jeongyeon even respond. as she watched her friend walk away, jeongyeon twiddled with the strings on her skirt, almost waiting for something to happen. but nothing ever did, and so she fished her cellphone out of her cross body bag and scrolled through her contacts.

"should i call him?" she wondered aloud to herself. "ah fuck it, i'm cold." she mumbled, standing up and clicking the contact in her phone. she held the cold screen up to hear ear and shivered as she listened to the phone ring. she half-expected it to just not pick up entirely.

"hey?"

jeongyeon perked up, knowing that her prayers had been answered. "hi, channie..." she mumbled bashfully into her end of the phone. "you okay? it's like..two in the morning." jeongyeon sighed and could feel her face flush. "uh yeah, but i was just calling to see if you-" "could come pick you up?" "how did you-" "just send me your location and i'll be right there." and with that, jeongyeon listened as the call ended abruptly. "aaaand he's angry with me..."

jeongyeon waited for what felt like ages in the cold, and she couldn't help but feel like she deserved it at least a tiny bit. a small part of her thought that chris would never show up and she'd just have to walk home with nothing but her heels and house key as protection from any danger, which, again, she partly felt like she deserved after waking up her friend, but as she considered this, a very familiar car pulled up near her, and she shamefully stepped out of the alleyway to greet her friend.

she approached the passenger seat window and carefully leaned down to knock on the window. as it rolled down, she got a better look at her friend, and she felt even worse. he had obvious dark circles under his eyes, his hair was very messy, and he was very obviously in his pajamas. "thank you..." she thanked him. "please just get in the car, yeon." and she did. she climbed into the vehicle, and listened to him, because if she wasn't going to listen to his advice about not getting into trouble like it was her oxygen, she'd at least listen to him now.

"i'm really sorry, chris." she admitted. "i feel like i-" and he put up a hand to shush her as he started to drive, not even telling her to put on her seatbelt like he always did. "don't even, dude." jeongyeon felt incredibly small under the very apparent judgement of her close friend, and not in a good way. at the same time, though, jeongyeon never knew when to stop or when not to tease, so she said something very stupid. "shit, i was just trying to apologize."

chan didn't even have to say anything, because just the cold, tense and very abrupt silence of the air around the two told her that that was a bit much. "yeah, just like you always do, huh? i'd love to know where and when i need to pick you up from in a few days. will it be a party next time? or maybe this stupid running away from the police shit again?" he was mad. he never got angry near her. the only time she'd seen chan generally angry was when some gross guy had groped her in the hallway their freshman year of highschool. he got into a fight for her, and the memory alone made jeongyeon cringe as she realized just how much he did for her.

the rest of the car ride was silent after chan's outburst, and rightfully so. you could cut the tension in the car with a knife, and jeongyeon could swear she could feel the intense disappointment and pure anger radiating off of the boy in the drivers seat. after a drive that felt like it'd lasted an excruciating eternity, chris finally pulled into a parking spot in front of their shared apartment they'd been staying in while they waited to get their dorm information for the new year. the car was at a full stop, and yet nobody moved. jeongyeon thought if she so much as blinked too intensely that chan might just pick her up and slam dunk her like a basketball into the concrete.

jeongyeon carefully turned her head to look at chan, and he looked absolutely beat. "hey," she said, finally breaking the terrible silence. "thank you. for tonight, and every other night. i don't think i say it enough, but i really do appreciate how much you do for me." she admitted, and she couldn't help but smile as chan's eyes seemed to widen, not expecting the thanks. "well, i'm sorry for getting angry. i just really care about you, y'know? i just feel like you're gonna get hurt one of these days, and i don't like it." and jeongyeon knew exactly where he was coming from.

"yeah, i know. i'm sorry i make you worry so much, channie." but he waved it off and flashed his signature bright smile. "it's your job, don't worry about it." he joked. jeongyeon laughed, covering her mouth with her hand out of habit. "seems like it." she replied through little giggles. chan hummed in agreement. "let's just head up, yeah?" he suggested, looking at his best friend with a smile, jeongyeon nodding in approval.

"i'll make you breakfast tomorrow morning to make up for waking you, if you'll let me?" she offered from behind the taller mans frame as she watched him unlock the door to their apartment. "i think saying no to any sort of free food would be a crime." he said over his shoulder as the pair walked into the apartment, and jeongyeon laughed. "what do you even want me to make you?" she asked, slipping off her uncomfortable heels while chris simply kicked off a pair of slides. she noticed he had socks on with them, and she scrunched her nose.

"surprise me." he teased. "now, food is on the table if you want it. i'm going to bed." he said all in one breath. as he turned to leave, though, jeongyeon grabbed him by the arm, and pulled him into a hug. chan was surprised to say the least, and by the way his body went stiff at the action, jeongyeon could tell. "thank you," she mumbled, muffled by his chest. "i know i said it in the car, but i really don't know if i can say it enough. seriously, thank you for taking care of me." at some point while jeongyeon was talking, chan wrapped his arms around the girl, but neither of them really noticed.

"of course." he replied before pulling away. "i care about you." and jeongyeon could tell that he meant it. jeongyeon pulled away as well, suddenly making a sour face. "okay, we're done being sentimental for today, right?" she joked, nudging her friend. "god, i meant what i said but i never know what to do afterwards." hoseok laughed. "me neither." he agreed. "i'm so glad that we're best friends, or else i wouldn't be able to do any of this."

chan laughed. "i know, right?"
