"Alley!" My boss shouted. I turned around, a smug look spread across my face.
"Yes?"
"Why are there people sitting over there look like they are not having fun?! Give them some Boose!" I stuck a certain finger up and him and turned around, sliding a bottle of Vodka into my hand as I walked past the bench. " And make sure they pay for it!" He yelled after me. I rolled my eyes. Rock music blared in my ears as I walked around the club. People in black that smelt to strongly of sweat danced around me. People making out here and there, topped with three people in the corner, looking glum. I smiled and, with a great amount of effort, made it look like I was enjoying what I was doing. "Why the long faces?" They still stared at me, the three girls mascara and eye lined frown's, still making my boss angry. " It's only $35 to make your day fun again!" I tried again, holding up the bottle of Vodka in their faces. " We shouldn't have to pay for happiness," the middle one spat. And with that, the three of them turned, and stalked out the door. I turned around to see my boss sending me a venomous glare across the dancing peoples heads. I started walking back towards the bar, ducking and swerving around swinging hips and arms. " Nice job Alley, that was brilliant," Garry said, my bosses voice filled with sarcasm. "Can you ever do something right?" He asked.
" As a matter of fact I can," I said. " But my talents stretch way further than this sh#t hole." I glared at him. His face, even in the dimly lit space started to turn red. Dammit. "Your fired," he growled. I had it up to my neck, so I decided to go out with a bang. " That's fine Garry, because you have nothing for me here." I smashed the bottle on the side of the counter, clear liquid running down the side, the smell of alcohol filling the air. " That's just fine, because I quit!" I followed the girls suit, and stalked out of the club. I could feel everyone staring after me and I imagined my bosses face, filled with rage and shock. Although my father would be furious too, I caught a smile slipping through and onto my lips, as I let the nights air and darkness swallow me in.
I opened the door to my house as quietly as a could, but the hinges still gave a squeak. It was one in the morning, and I know how angry Dad would be if he was awoken. I crept up the stairs and in my room. I peeled of my jeans and tee, slipped on one of my huge shirts, and lets sleep wrap me in it's arms.
"What!" Just like my boss, my fathers face was in the fast process of turning purple. "What do you mean you got fired!"
"Well technically I quit Dad," I pointed out matter of factually.
"I don't care which damn one it was! You don't have a job!" He yelled in my face.
"Just because you're to lazy to get out and get one yourself!" I stormed up the stairs. Away from my Dad's cigarette butts, dirty dishes and betting papers taking over the bottom half of our house. I shut my door, and buried my face into my pillow for two hours until I had to go and get my sleep deprived body a coffee.
"Alley!" My friend Ramon ran up behind me as i walked out of the local coffee shop. "Jesus girl, what have you done?" He asked, scanning my bagged eyes, hollow cheeks and technically pajamas.
"I quit my job, my dad is pissed and I am done," I looked at him over the brim of my coffee cup, letting the hot liquid pour through my body. "But i really don't want to talk about it." Ramon gave me a look, but i ignored him.
"Alley! You should come with me to work today! I have some friends that would love to meet you, to hear you sing."
"Ramon, I told you, I really am not that good. Besides, what would I sing? You know I don't sing my own songs." We walked down the path, side by side.
"You don't have too but Alley, you need people to know your singing abilities. You could really go some where huge! This could even be a new job opportunity!"
"I said no," I took a deep breath. "Ramon, I appreciate it, really, it's just- I don't know, I just really feel like taking a break for a while. My Dad is a real pain to get a new job, but I really just want to wait. Because i am only twenty! I have been from job to job just for my Dad and I think he should learn to do something for himself sometimes." I looked over at him sadly.
"Just come on," he grabbed my hand and started leading me down the path, "It'll be fun!"
"Brenda!" Ramon yelled across the room. A lady turned around, a drag queen.
"Ramon!" She ran up to him and kissed him on both cheeks. "Who's this?!" She asked, flashing me a magnificent smile.
"Hi, I am Alley," I said timidly.
"The Alley?! The one you always talk about? The singer!" She asked, looking back to Ramon who was smiling up at her.
"This is the one." He pushed me forward.
