Monday, November 25, 2019 | 11:50 amPulling a jacket on over her uniform, Hailey left Bezalel Academy of Magical Arts to go meet her mentor. Being a senior at the academy, she was allowed to leave after third block was over to take on an apprenticeship in an area of her choice. Hers was a special case, though. She didn't choose it, it chose her.
She was told it was because of her extraordinary ability to understand the sciences and purposes behind magic and spellcasting, but as she walked to the office building, she pondered on the thought. Sure, she had good grades, but there were others better than her. There must have been something else going on for them to have chosen her as well.
She had been approached about it over the summer, and was sworn to absolute secrecy. If the public knew about it, there would probably be an outrage. After all, mage-kind was generally feared among the non-magical population, which made up 90% of the population. Mages were the minority, and were slowly trying to even phase magic out of existence themselves. She thought this wasn't right.
There was a reason they were born with these powers. Compared to other countries, their government was really quite generous with magical liberties. Why not take advantage of it? That's what The Guild was for.
She opened the front door to a shorter office building, checking in with the woman at the front desk before taking an elevator up to the third out of five floors. This was where Guild 2 was located. When the elevator dinged open, announcing her arrival, she immediately looked to see who was present today.
Right off the bat, she saw Ayana and Mai, who had looked up to see who just entered the room. Then there was Amos, who seemed to have just come back from the bathroom. She looked around a bit more, and sure enough, there Wolfe was hunched over his desk looking at files, not bothering to pay attention to her arrival.
"Hello, everyone." She greeted, pushing her glasses up on the bridge of her nose, as they had started to fall when she looked down to look at her empty mentor's desk.
"Hey there, Hailey." Amos greeted, scratching his beard lazily as he yawned. "Seems Aldritch isn't going to be here until later in the afternoon. Care to help me with some paperwork instead?"
"Oh, yeah, sure thing. Still leftover stuff from the last case?" She reached up and pulled her long ashy hair back into a ponytail, pulling an office chair over to the other side of Amos's desk.
"Yeah, Ayana and I have been splitting it up to make it go faster so we can move on. Wolfe and Aldritch have been working on something new we got in this morning. From the briefing, it sounded like an interesting one. Some guy's been going around kidnapping mages after they get finished at work. Around the Academy, actually. I mean, it isn't something we haven't seen. If I had to take a guess, it's another psycho human trying to gain magical abilities. It's been going on for a week and three people have gone missing. Aldritch went out to scout some potential places he might target next."
"Oh, I see." Hailey frowned, a bit saddened at the thought that three people had already gone missing. They had only gotten the case this morning, which meant that each victim had been missing for over the crucial 24 hour mark. They most likely were dead. "Before I leave, let me get a look at the suspects. I'll try to keep a look out when I'm walking around the area."
"Gotcha." A deep voice sounded from the corner of the room. It seemed Wolfe, as he worked, was also listening in on her conversation with Amos. Knowing him, it was probably to make sure Amos didn't tell her something wrong or completely out there about the new case. When she looked over at Wolfe, she noted that he didn't once look up from his files.
