I groaned as i rolled out of bed, smacking my alarm to shut it up. "ugh... top o' the morning" i moaned to my little plushie that one of my many few fans had made for me. i looked out of my dorm window onto the campus below; it was already bustling with activity even though it was only 8 in the morning. I lived in Manchester university, a long way from my home in Brighton but the university there... it just didn't seem right to me. The uni campus was massive, and stretched on for roads upon roads and roads. i was lucky to have a dorm next to the computing building, or else i might've needed to purchase a bike just to get to lesson on time. I was studying programming: more specifically, Game Design. I had always loved video games as a child and at the age of 14 i got into programming. I had published a side scroller called "Septic Eye Story", a game where you play as a character loosely based off of me: he has green hair and a large, green eye with a blue iris that shoots lasers and can be upgraded. However, my favourite game was a game by a person called Mark Fischbach; an action-adventure game called "Truth and Gods". It was a game where you played as a demigod and aimed to overthrow Olympus in order to expose the truth of the Gods, which was basically that they all don't care about humanity. I had to share a flat with 3 other people, but one of the beds was for some reason vacant. I never thought much of it though, because why did i need to? I pat my plushie on the head after throwing on a black t-shirt and black jeans and walked out into the kitchen. My good friend, Felix, had cooked me breakfast. He was basically the only person in the dorm who i talked to, as we had the same class together, and he had grown to be such a close friend that he instinctively knows what i wanted for breakfast (which, let me tell you, is the BEST. SKILL. EVER). He had made the usual bacon, eggs, and mushrooms which i had devoured within seconds. We then set out to the Computing building for our class at 9.
When i walked in the classroom, everyone was unusually chatty. some dude who i didn't even recognise came up to me and explained the situation. "You don't know? we've got a new kid in our class." I shrugged and sat down, as i knew with my massive lack of confidence that i would never even attempt to speak to him or her.
Or so i thought.
A man with red hair, glasses and a burly physique opened the door. He was wearing a red and black flannel with a white shirt underneath, and blue jeans. "Hi", he spoke in a deep, smooth voice, "is this the computing class?" the teacher checked the register and asked for his name. "Mark. Mark Fischbach." I died inside. i started internally screaming. There was no way he decided to go to this uni! Why would he? Did he move over here? Surely he was in the wrong class. As the teacher nodded and told him to sit down, all of those thoughts were shut down. Even worse, the only seat that was empty was at the back... right next to my seat. Oh god. I was sweating rivers as he sat down next to me. "Hi! whats your name?" He asked with a smile on his face. "Oh... erm... jack." i said quietly. "nice to meet you jack! i love your accent by the way." he noted, picking up on my Irish tongue and outstretching a hand. I shook it and then quickly retreated into myself. There were 5 seconds of silence before i burst out. "Truth and Gods. Your game." he looked surprise at my acknowledgement. "oh, so you've heard of me! what do you think of the game? i know its not the best but-"
"Its my favourite game. I have over 300 hours in it and I've beat it 5 times. I know all about the Hephaestus secret upgrades and have achieved every ending and accomplishment." i looked away, embarrassed by my own geekiness. "That's... Awesome! I'm so happy you like it. I guess it was fate that we met, huh?" He was so kind hearted and nice, it was almost like a dream. I pulled out my laptop and started programming my next game, which was an adventure game called Dragon Blaze, a game where the main protagonist has dragon blood in their veins and has to adventure across the world to recover his heritage. it was roughly based off of Zelda's Breathe Of The Wild, but with amped combat mechanics. I was inserting some textures when Mark stopped me. "Why don't you do this instead", and quickly turned a boring texture into a detailed and beautiful one. "you're so talented... how did you even do that?" He gave me a detailed explanation of how he did it and told me he was using a similar technique in his next game: Truth and Gods II. We talked about this until the end of lesson when he asked where the dorms were. "Oh, wheres your room. I might not know it, i'm sorry"
"Its fine! it said Accommodation C, room 14."
That's my room.
i told him this and he seemed overjoyed, but i was panicking inside. It went a little something like this- HOLY FUCK HES IN MY DORM SHIT OH MY LORD HES SLEEPING WITHIN METERS FROM ME WHAT THE FUCK WHY HAVE THE GODS FORSAKEN ME WITH THIS- and so on. so forth. I took him to our room, where he promptly asked to play games with me. I showed him my mastery of Truth and Gods, amazing him with the amount of skill i had in the game. "i didn't even mean for that combo to be possible. What kind of button input did you do?" I shrugged. "That stuffs pretty easy once you've played 5 times. Then he said that he had to got to his next class, and rushed off once i told him where it was. Later that night, as i was lying in bed, i had a conversation with myself. "I never thought that antisocial, little old me would feel so... Comfortable around someone," i whispered to myself. Then i passed out, wondering what the next day would hold.
