There had been instances in my life where I thought that maybe there was more beyond the life that I had lived, the life my people lived but that was quickly erased from my mind along with any other rebellious thoughts I had.

My name is Razi Gullen and I live within confinement. There is no fighting, no protests, no secrecy, and no rebellions. The life we live is not ours and is planned out for us since birth. We have what is called The Attain and it is when the high-ranking Jires come to our homes and take us to attain some of our memories. The Attain has been around since the beginning of time; it was a procedure created in order to keep the people’s mind simple and obedient, for if a person defies the routine then all order shall be destroyed. The Jires are always the ones to keep the peace during The Attain because they hold the second highest status in our civilization, the highest are the Ambles who are rarely seen or even heard from, the one after the Jires are the Pivons, the fourth are the Chines, and lastly the fifth and supposed lowest status is the Ricors although there is a rumor that there is a no-status in our civilization called the Ans but from what my father tells me it is just a myth to scare kids. The Attain being a tedious process only happens once in a while but when frequent rebellious thoughts are monitored The Attains come more often. The Attain is hosted at a community center that I was on my way to until a Pivon that I had somewhat known from school stopped me. The idea was that you were on most occasions only speak to those of your own status but it wasn’t an enforced rule so what he was doing wasn’t forbidden but this boy by the name of Nole was standing in front of me stopping me from going to The Attain and I was curious why.

Nole stared at me “Are you going to The Attain?” he was observant; he knew I had second thoughts about attending.

I nodded obediently “I have no choice”

“Can I give you a choice?” his voice lowered, his stance tensed up “Can I give you another option to life?”

I couldn’t read this boy, I couldn’t tell if hew was joking with me or if he was dead serious but at the time I only knew one thing and that was in order to live I must obey the rules placed in front of me so I pushed him away and went on my way. I didn’t look back but I didn’t have to because I knew he was watching me, scanning me, focusing on just me. I walked into the center and instantly spotted my best friends Jen and Kez so I waved to them and they simultaneously spotted me and began walking towards me. Jen was a Chine just like me but Kez was a Pivon. It was rare to see a Pivon living amongst the Chines especially because both his parents are Chines but he acts as if he is one of us even though he isn’t treated like it. Once Jen and Kez got over to me Jen began talking.

Jen asked, “What took you so long The Attain is about to start?”

I smiled “I was handling some business”

“What kind of business?” Kez asked hovering over me. It was no mystery that Kez was taller than me but because he had so much confidence in his stance that he seemed even taller and made me cower in his presence when he questioned me.

I replied, “I was talking to another friend of mine”

“Who could that…”

Luckily before Kez could finish his sentence The Attain began and the people all around us began lining up in rows designated by our ranks as we all got part of our memories erased. The known was that everyone at one point in time has rebellious thoughts even if they don’t come until the day of The Attain but that memory or memories is swiped clean from our mind and you are left with serene tranquility and no longer pose a threat to the civilization. When a person has too many thoughts of rebellion they and are held back where they will be demoted but if the thoughts continue they are labeled as dangerous and they will be handled with accordingly and removed from society. I walked up for my turn and sat in the chair and the light that usually turned green was blinking red, blinking because something had gone wrong. I panicked but the Jire who was handling me ensured me that I was in no danger and posed no threat so I needed to calm down and step to the side. When everyone was being dismissed I watched as everyone left the building except a select few. I waved to Jen when I saw her leaving the building but I had no idea where Kez was.
