• The story begins at dawn in a simple Thai farmer's house where all family members sleep on straw mats in one room under mosquito nets.

• As usual, two very close siblings, Dawan and kwai, start their morning on a bridge over the village river welcoming the break of dawn.

• Kwai reminds Dawan that it is time they return home to prepare for school. However, Dawan seems reluctant as it is the day when the school will announce the recipient for the scholarship.

• Kwai speaks excitedly at the prospect of him going to the city if he wins the scholarship. He also hopes to bring change to the village.

• Dawan then mentions the stack of rice sacks underneatg their house. Shr expresses her concern that they would not have enough rice once the sacks are taken by the tax collector. They plan to ask the teacher about the tax collector as they realised how unfair the situation is to the villagers.

• Just before they leave, Kwai speake about the possibility of Dawan getting the scholarship. She, however, feels that being a female she has little chance of obtaining the scholarship. Females often face discrimination. She recalls thqt only with her brother's help, she managed to attend school the same year as Kwai even thought she is a year older than him.
