I barley knew them, and now after losing Mason, I'm expected to move in with people who are basically strangers to me. People who never came to visit, didn't even come to their grandson's funeral. These people are not my family, yet I'm forced to live with them. I'm seventeen, so I have to and I don't have a job. I'm a senior in highschool. What the hell else am I supposed to do?
I'm on my way to the airport. Dreading what's to come. This is probably the longest my parents have been home in years. They are constantly traveling for work, and for pleasure. Me and Mason basically raised ourselves. We were always close with our father, our mother not so much. We called our father, dad, but we always referred to our mother as, Mary. That's her first name. She may have given birth to us, but she was no kind of mother. If it wasn't for our dad, we would have been in foster care.
We pull up to the drop off at the airport. I've never flown by myself before, Mason or my dad was always with me. But I'm doing this alone. Mason is gone, and my dad has to fly out of the country with my mother tomorrow for work. He's the one that drove me to the airport. I wasn't allowed to bring much. I was given a new phone, and laptop. And was only allowed to bring a small suitcase of clothes and that's my carry-on. My mother decided I had to forget everything I ever knew. So she only let me bring the new things she bought for me. Most of which wasn't even my size. So it was even less that I could actually bring. It's July, school doesn't start for another month and a half. That's hopefully enough time for me to find a job and get settled in.
I stare out the window at the doors of the airport, and everyone that's walking in and out.
"It'll be okay Dali." My dad tells me. "I'll be by after my trip to visit you. I'll call and text you everyday." He gives me a small smile when I look over at him.
"I just hope they aren't crazy like, Mary is. They are her parents after all." I tell him sighing.
"They are kind people. I honestly don't know how your mother is related to them." He chuckles.
"I hope your right, dad. I'm scared." I tell him honestly.
"I know dear, but this is what's best." He gives me a hug and I get out of the car. I grab my bags and head inside. I go through security, and after that go to my terminal. It's about an hour left before my flight. I have my purse around my shoulder and decide to stop at Starbucks to get a drink.
"Can I help you?" The older woman asks me.
"Can I get a grande passion ice tea with lemonade please?" I ask.
"Oh course dear. Three dollars and fourteen cents please." I give her a gift card that was in my wallet that I forgot about.
I get my drink and thank the barista. Then move back over towards my terminal. I sit and listen to music on my phone while I wait. It's about half an hour later when they start calling my flight. I'm first in line and give my ticket to the attendant. I board my plane and find my seat. Putting my carry-on in the over head and sitting down. My music is still playing. It's the only thing keeping me from crying. I get a text on my phone from an unknown number.
Unknown: Hello Daliah, this is Linda, your grandmother please keep me updated to if your flight is on time. Your grandfather will be picking you up. Your father gave us the flight information. Have a safe flight. 💞
Me: it's on time, just boarded. Thank you for letting me know.
I never got a response after that. But I turn my music off and look out the window as we take off. The flight is half empty, so no one is sitting next to me. After we are up in the air, I put my headphones back in and play more music. I drift asleep as we sore through the air. I haven't slept in days. I haven't been able too, everything that's happened. I just couldn't sleep. I don't wake back up until we are about to land.
