Papa sat in front of me at the kitchen table, a cup of tea in his shaking hands. I could see that he was still trying to process that I was here, that I was home, and I understood that. My mind was still in a turmoil at how fast this went, that just a moment ago I was running for my life and now I'm in a kitchen with both of my parents with me.
"Are you sure that you're not hungry, James?" Dad asked for the third time, eyeing me with worry in his eyes.
"Yes, I'm sure, dad. I'm fine." Dad just nodded slightly, pushing away from the kitchen counter to come and sit beside my papa. I just watched them as they embraced each other, a light smile on my face. I've really missed them and I can see how difficult this time has been for them by the bags under their eyes, their pale skin and overall, the dull atmosphere. I'm just glad that we all came out of this alive.
"James?"
I snapped out of my thoughts, pulling a hand through my dark hair to stop myself from fidgeting. "I'm sorry," I apologized, "I zoned out again, didn't I?"
"Yes you did," Papa answered while stretching his arm across the table, "I just said that we all need some sleep before we take care of things." He put his hand over mine, giving it an assuring squeeze before pulling away.
"You can use the spare room until we fix it to your liking. It even has its own bathroom," Papa smiled, his green eyes glinting with joy as he took dad's hand in his, "I'm so happy that our family is finally whole again."
-
Water droplets coated my skin as I stepped out of the small shower, shivering when the cold air whooshed over my body. I quickly wrapped a dirty towel around my waist before the guard in front of the door could get a good look, but guessing from his creepy grin, he probably did.
"It's sad really," the guard mumbled, "I wouldn't mind a piece of you, but unfortunately, you're off limits." He harshly grabbed my arm, pulling me along as he walked me towards my room, or maybe prison cell is a better word for it.
"Give me your towel," he gestured towards my torso when I didn't move, giving me a cold glare, "now." I quickly pulled it off, giving it to him with a shaky hand before I turned around and walked into my cell. I frowned as I picked up my clothes from a dirty puddle of water, gagging when I took them up to my nose. I can't wear these.
"Can I get s-some new clothes, please?" The guard just laughed, slapping his thighs as he almost fell over.
"New clothes?" he snorted, "you seriously think a mutt like you deserves new clothes?" his black eyes bore into mine, taunting me, "you don't even deserve to live."
I woke up in a cold sweat with my heart almost beating out of my chest.
Alex.
His name haunted my mind, and the memories of the guard kept flashing in my mind. I wanted do drown my feelings away in a hot shower, but I couldn't, that dream was still so vivid. I sighed heavily, rubbing my face with my hands as I came to the realization that I wouldn't get any more sleep tonight.
-
Birds chirped, the lukewarm wind tousled my hair and the sun warmed my skin as I laid in the grass with a new feeling of happiness settling in my chest. It was moments like these that I appreciated the most, that moment of just living in the now and not worrying about anything.
I didn't think about Gregory.
I didn't think about Alex.
And I didn't think of my past.
I was just enjoying the smell, feel and taste of freedom.
"Breakfast!"
Papa's voice interrupted my peaceful moment, and I pushed myself off the ground to go and sit beside papa at the table. I served myself some fruit and toast with a glass of apple juice, doubting that I could get more than that down my stomach.
"Good morning, my beautiful family!" Dad greeted us with a big smile, his gray eyes glinting with joy as he seated himself at the other side of the table. "I have some news actually," dad continued while filling his plate up with scrambled eggs, "Alpha Peters and his family will be coming over for dinner tonight."
My mind started to race with thoughts and my dad probably noticed as he tried to reassure me. "He just wants to talk about some stuff, and he thought it would be a good idea for you to know the people who take care of this pack." I just nodded my head thoughtfully, sipping on my apple juice as I came to the conclusion that this maybe wouldn't be such a bad idea.
-
I sighed heavily as I looked between my old clothes, I wasn't really that surprised that they fitted me almost perfectly since I haven't really gone up in weight these past few years. I shook my head, not wanting to sink deeper into my thoughts as the Alpha would soon be coming over with his family.
I wasn't really that nervous anymore, but doubts were still lingering in my mind like small demons, always whispering and trying to taunt me. They would never really disappear and I could just try to ignore them, just like my memories.
"Dad!" I shouted, I needed him to help me chose some clothes, but I also wanted a distraction from myself.
"Yes?" He popped his head in through the door, and I laughed as he made a weird face. "That's what I wanted to hear!" He smiled warmly at me, before he assessed the situation I was in. "So I guess that you can't find anything to wear?" I just shook my head, throwing myself on the bed with a sigh of frustration.
"I think your papa is better for situations like this, I'll go get him." I heard his heavy footsteps as he walked away and I sat up, pulling my knees up to my chest to rest my head on it.
"Papa Seth to the rescue!" He barged into my room and almost dived into my closet with a fist in the air and I guffawed at his goofy behavior.
-
Almost an hour later and I was dressed in a red button up with a pair of black trousers. It hadn't been easy, but we had done it and a big smile covered my face as papa finished with my hair.
"You look beautiful, sweetheart," he pulled me into a hug and I cleared my throat to keep the tears at bay.
"Thank yo-" I was interrupted by the shrill tone of the doorbell and my heart started doing somersaults as dad shouted for us to come downstairs.
"It will be fine, James." Papa patted my back and gave me a warm smile before taking my wrist in his hand. "It's just a dinner."
