"Sofia, come on! We're going to be late," my mom called up the stairs.
"Just a second," I called back, struggling to zip up my dress. I had only bought it a few days ago for this stupid dinner party that my parents are forcing me to go to.
It would be the stereotypical dinner party, you know, where there are no other kids your age there so your options are either play with the little kids or sit there quietly not bothering the adults because you're only sixteen and they don't want you to know their secret adult business and you are forced to leave your phone at home so you aren't "antisocial" and "ignoring everyone at the party". Her words, not mine.
"Mom! Can you help me zip up this dress?" I yelled after a few more seconds of struggling.
"You mean I actually get to see it?" she yelled back. She had trusted me with $100 to go buy a dress for this party all by myself and I hadn't let her see it yet.
"Yes. Now can you please help me?"
"Oh Sofia, it's beautiful!" She said walking into the room and taking in the dress. It was black with a silvery grey pattern on it. It fell almost to my knees and was a little tight, which I'm sure she picked up on but chose not to say anything.
I had done my hair in a simple bun, pulled a few pieces out and let them hang around my face, and stuck some pink flowers in around the bun.
Somehow, my mom managed to get the zipper to go the rest of the way up without any trouble.
"How did you do that?" I questioned her as I slipped on my black heels.
"Mom magic," she said mysteriously.
"Pfft, I totally loosened it for you," I joked.
"Mmhmm," she said, pursing her lips. "Let's go, we're going to be late."
So as I predicted, it was awful. I was the only sixteen year old there. Everyone else was either younger than 12 or older than 20. I didn't even have my parents to talk to as they somehow turned into the most social people on Earth and were nowhere to be found until we sat down to eat.
I sat between my parents and ate quietly, trying not to attract too much attention to myself. I did notice four empty seats that looked as though they had been moved last minute.
The dinner part was over rather quickly and everyone left the table to mingle. I went over to the living room where the little kids were and played pretend with them until I heard the doorbell ring.
I walked out of there to go see who was at the door and was suddenly spun around into the wall. It was my neighbor, Beau Brooks.
"Hey Sofia. You look hot tonight," he whispered seductively in my ear.
"Get off Beau," I laughed, shoving his shoulder. "What do you want?"
"You need to go to the dining room. Jai told me that someone was looking for you."
"Speaking of, where were you guys during the dinner part? I was all by myself," I asked him.
"Mum was running late. She got home an hour late from work today," he replied. Noticing that I was about to respond, he covered my mouth saying, "That's enough talking to me," and shoving me gently in the direction of the dining room.
I walked into the now dark room and looked around.
"Hello?" I called softly, searching for the light switch. "Is there someone in here?"
When there was no answer, I decided to wait for a minute to see if someone would show up. I had given up on trying to find a light switch so I sat down on one of the chairs. I was only sitting a few seconds when I heard someone clear their throat softly.
"Hi Sofia," the voice said, walking closer to me. I stood up, waiting for the person to come closer. The person came closer and wrapped their arms around me in a hug.
It was Luke. He was dressed in a white dress shirt with a skinny black tie loosely hanging from his neck, black skinny jeans, and a pair of black Converse. I wasn't sure how he was allowed in due to his less-than-formal attire.
"Hi Luke," I said, smiling. "What's up? Beau said that Jai said that you wanted to see me".
"I do," he said, gesturing for me to sit down. "I want to tell you something that I probably should have told you a year and a half ago," he said, seeming to be thinking out loud now.
"Okay," I said, slightly nervous. He was silent for a minute before taking a deep breath and saying what was on his mind.
"I really like you Sofia. More than you will ever know and I would like to have the honor of calling you my girlfriend. If you'll let me of course," he said, blushing and running his hands through his hair.
I sat in a stunned silence for a good ten seconds. His face changed from nervous and hopeful to sad at my silence.
Little did he know that I really liked him too and wanted him to be my boyfriend more than anything.
"Luke, I..." I started, but he cut me off.
"It's okay. I understand that you don't want to date me. I knew it was a bad id-"
This time I cut him off by putting my lips on his softly. He looked at me in surprise before relaxing into the kiss a bit. He kissed me back gently for a minute before I pulled away.
"Luke, I was trying to say that I like you to and I DO want to date you. I've felt the same way for a long time,"
"Really?" he asked.
"Yes, you idiot. Even Jai and Beau picked up on it and have been teasing me about it for the past six months," I laughed, ruffling his hair.
He fixed his hair and we talked until Beau came over and said "Come on lovebirds. I'm tired and would like to get home. Sofia, your parents already left and asked if I could take you home so you're coming with me,"
"Wouldn't she be cuming with Luke?" Jai asked, smirking as he walked in.
"Shut up bro," Luke said, turning red and rubbing the back of his neck. "Let's just go"
We walked out to Beau's car unnoticed by anyone. Jai sat up front with Beau, leaving me and Luke in the back. It was dark and cold inside the car so Luke took his hands and ran them up and down my arms until the goosebumps subsided. After Beau started driving, he started running them up and down my thighs, making me shiver and snuggle in closer to him.
All too soon, we reached the neighborhood and Beau pulled up in front of my house.
"Get out and walk the lady to the door!" He said to Luke. To me, he said "See you tomorrow babe" and winked.
"Goodnight guys. Thanks for the ride Beau," I said stepping out of the car. Luke followed me up to my door.
"Well... goodnight then Sofia," he said, holding my hands in his. As he turned to go, he tried to let my hands go, but I wouldn't let his go.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" I asked.
Instead of answering, he pressed his lips softly to mine.
"Goodnight Luke" I said after pulling away, my cheeks red.
"Goodnight baby. I'll see you tomorrow" he said, smiling at me. I waited on my front porch, watching to make sure he got over to his house alright before walking into my own.
I quickly slipped out of my dress and into my pajamas before falling asleep with a smile on my face.
This was the best night ever.
