Alicia came to with a pounding headache, a racing heart, and tingling lips.
She raised shaking fingers to trace her tender lips. A confusing concoction of nausea and rage spilled over her at the memory of his touch. He'd been right there, and she had done nothing. The heartless murderer had been in her grasp and she had been helpless.
Her blade pressed against her thigh, reminding her of her failure.
She bared her teeth, doing her best to keep the overwhelming anger contained. She had been so close, and she would never get another chance. She rested her head back against her seat, her emotion doing nothing for the searing pain between her eyes.
The rest of her surroundings came into focus as her eyes adjusted to the dim light. Groggily, she surveyed the area, every square inch of the ship was filled with delinquents. To her left was a small girl, her hair pulled into three tight braids that hung halfway down her back, she looked bored as she picked at her red harness.
To her right sat Bellamy, he stared across the rows of delinquents with a vacant expression as if he was lost in his mind. Once again, Alicia felt a strong sense that she knew the young man. She was sure she must not have known him long, but some deep memory told her that the interaction had been important.
The drop ship shuddered, causing Alicia's breath to hitch in her throat. A deep rumble resonated through their metal tomb as the engines spluttered into life. Alicia squeezed her eyes shut, trying to take deep, even breathes.
She wasn't ready for this, she wasn't ready to die. It had been so easy to accept her fate when it was 19 days away, but now, when it was staring her right in the eye she was panicking. She didn't know how to go down easy.
The floor vibrated angrily beneath her feet, then in an instant it fell away, and they were in free fall. She set her jaw, biting her tongue to keep herself from screaming. It felt like every one of her organs was competing to make their way up her throat.
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to think of anything but the fact that they were hurtling through space. Unexpectedly, Alicia's head was slammed back against her seat as the ship tossed her around, a deafening crash filled the ancient ship.
Alicia screamed, she couldn't hold it back. Her eyes stung, she sniffled putting all her energy into holding herself together.
With a crackle of static a screen lit up on the wall in front of her, casting blue light over the delinquents anxious faces. Thelonious Jaha looked calmly down at them, his face gained an echo of 'boos' from her fellow inmates.
Unlike the general prison population Alicia didn't have strong views around the chancellor, she didn't particularly like him, but she didn't despise him either. Her capacity to hate was largely taken up by Bryce.
Bellamy fidgeted uneasily, his eyes trained on his lap. The girl on her left seemed largely uninterested in what Jaha had to say. She didn't pay attention to the chancellor's speech either, for focused on keeping her small breakfast where it belonged.
