[WARNING THERE'S A BIT OF GORE]
We were on a roadtrip. It was a family roadtrip---or, at least, that's what it felt like. Despite several people whom I don't recognize from real life, but whom my dream self seemed to know.
It was late at night, I could barely see anything if it weren't for the moonlight seeping through the windows of the van we rode in. The vehicle was large, spacious enough for two families. Though the inside resembled more of a bus than a van.
As one of the youngest, I, of course rode in the back---not that I was complaining, the back was the most spacious part. My dad was driving, my mom in the passenger's seat. We were driving through a rather desolate road, surrounded by forests.
One of the people I didn't recognize opened the window. I'm not sure if it was to catch some wind or something of the sort, but when they did so, wind wasn't the only thing that entered the car.
We didn't see it get in. We didn't even realize it before a scream echoed throughout the van.
The vehicle shook violently before everything went perfectly still, as if nothing ever happened. My parents didn't so much as react. Some of the other people were confused of what had happened and were turning their heads to look around, but it was just too dark and too spacious to actually comprehend anything.
If it were a real life situation, I'm sure everyone would have panicked. I was confused as well, but somehow didn't make a big deal out of it, and returned to fiddling with my cellphone. It was as if we'd rather just get to our destination and figure things out from there.
Everything seemed fine until we heard another scream. This time it was accompanied by a body slamming to the back of the van---right in front of me.
It was a woman, one of the other people I didn't recognize on this roadtrip. She slumped to the floor of the vehicle, lifeless, blood dripping from her neck where a chunk of it was bitten off.
I didn't see the assailant, but I know it was big. Although the strangest part was how the body of someone I supposedly know and consider as family was just thrown in front of me, with blood dripping everywhere, killed by something we hadn't been able to recognize, and I wasn't even that bothered. I was only curious what had caused it. Oddly, no one else also reacted. My parents didn't even look back or stop the van to see what was wrong.
The next thing I remember was arriving at our destination, an inn of some sorts. As I got down from the van, I turned to my mom.
"What was the thing that killed those people?" I asked her.
"A vampire bat," she answered simply. "You know how they are."
My mom spoke as if inhumanly large and aggressive vampire bats who attack people were normal.
From my knowledge, I thought vampire bats were rather small creatures, not big or dangerous enough to bite a chunk off people's necks. More less kill them.
But my dream self seemed to have the same opinion as my mom.
"Of course, it's a vampire bat," I said as if it was the most obvious thing.
"When someone opened the window, they accidentally let it into the van," she explained further. I let out a scoff.
"Stupid," I muttered under my breath, and I returned to fiddling with my cellphone.
