SOOJIN IS STARTING TO THINK she never woke up from her sleep yesterday. That maybe all of this is still part of that bad dream. That none of this is real and it's only a part of her imagination that's playing tricks on her. It's only when she tastes metal on her tongue that she realises she'd been biting too hard on her bottom lip. What little hope she has for this to be another normal, uneventful day is thrown out of context as she finds herself standing among a crowd gathered in front of the television screens staring back at them through the glass window of an electronics store.
Last night's news replays in her head, forcing her to admit that none of this was a dream. Or ever was. And that it's actually happening.
It's frightening; knowing you have so little time left but so many things left undone.
"...the reports we're receiving tells us that yes, a fire erupted inside of the ship exactly 52 seconds after it entered the asteroid field. No one is sure what had caused the fire leading to the massive explosion, killing all 12 crew members and scientists aboard the space shuttle deliverance. Taking with them, our last and only hope..."
The crowd explodes with mumblings of both devastation and disbelief, whereas from the corner of her eyes Soojin can see a cluster of them shake their heads and walk away.
"It's probably going to be another false alarm like what happened in 2012. Another superstitious belief."
"One did crash in Florida. That's certainly not a false alarm."
"The Armageddon is literally coming, we're all going to fucking die!"
Soojin lets a sigh slip out of her lips amidst all the murmuring around her.
Some people believe it, some people don't. Soojin, on the other hand, doesn't know which side she stands with at this point.
Man, the Mayans are probably shaking by now.
"A month ago, scientists have spotted multiple asteroids that are set to collide with Earth, with the next closest one commonly known as the 3200 Phaethon. Unfortunately, after the devastating asteroid crash in Florida last night along with the reports of the destruction of the space shuttle deliverance, we now announce that the final mission to save mankind has failed."
"I repeat, the final mission to save mankind has failed."
The cafe, strangely, still radiates the same warm atmosphere as Soojin enters. She's thankful for that at least. With all the chaos going on outside, it feels like a haven in here. There's a few customers at the cafe this morning and Soojin wonders how they managed to dismiss the news so calmly.
She hears the grinding of coffee beans and and the air begins smell thick, sweet, from the smell of fresh coffee brewing.
She spots Taehyung by the counter. He greets her with the same bright smile he uses to greet their customers. "Welcome to Nam's! Care for a coffee? Espresso? Bagel? Enchilada?"
