the next day, corbyn was working in the library when daniel called him, wondering if he was free for lunch.
corbyn was supposed to have called him, but he'd gotten wrapped up in research and lost track of time. daniel didn't sound annoyed at his lapse, but corbyn wasn't going to risk hurting daniel's feelings by refusing his invitation, so the blonde got his stuff together and headed out to meet his fiancé at a café near his conference hotel.
he would rather have just worked all day. when he was working, he didn't have to think about anything else. he could drown all brooding thoughts with words on pages.
when he was with daniel, however, his mind started to move in directions that were simply too dangerous. corbyn tried to focus on the conversation at lunch, on daniel's enthusiastic ramblings about his morning at the writers' conference he was attending.
corbyn met his eyes, nodded at the right times, laughed at his amusing descriptions of eccentric fellow writers and the argument he'd gotten into at one session.
the first time corbyn had met daniel had been in a coffee shop for an initial meeting to discuss terms and prepare daniel for his first client session with corbyn.
daniel'd been pretty and young and nervous and surprisingly blunt. daniel'd asked him about his unusual name, and for some reason corbyn'd told him the truth.
"corbyn," daniel said, pulling his attention back.
"yeah."
"do you think that's a good idea?"
corbyn took a bite of his sandwich to give him time to figure out what daniel'd just said. finally he had to admit, "i'm sorry. what?"
"the honeymoon, what about spain?" daniel spoke slowly and without any particular inflection, a clear sign he was growing impatient with him.
the blonde blinked, finally processing that daniel'd changed topics and was now talking about wedding plans.
corbyn sighed and then shook his head. "what about quebec?"
"no." daniel looked annoyed. "i want to see the whole world, not the same place again and again."
"okay."
daniel frowned when he realized that corbyn wasn't happy with his own answer. "is that not a good place for you? where would you prefer? and please don't say quebec"
"wherever you'd like is fine."
corbyn wanted to marry daniel more than anything. and he was prepare to let their relationship grow and that meant accept that quebec was in the past.
but he honestly didn't even choose the date, he didn't care about the date, the location, or the kinds of flowers involved.
"i'd just like to set a place so we can make plans. it really doesn't have to be spain. i just say it because i want to know what do you think about it. we don't have to..."
" daniel, spain is fine. there's no reason to don't go there."
but daniel nocited the lack of emotion in corbyn's words. "oh." daniel looked down at his salad for a long time. "we can postpone the weeding it if you want."
