The car slowed to a halt into the pitch black driveway, six cylinder engine purring. Odette shut off the head lights and glanced over the divider at me, green eyes tainted with the wariness of a woman who knew she was in trouble.
"We're here." She said in her silky smooth voice; like a whisper between your ears, it pleaded with you to listen to anything she said. I simply glared, lips set in a thin hard lie. I'd decided somewhere between Richmond VA and Raliegh NC that I was going to go thermonuclear on her. Pausing the blaring opening guitar rift of a 30 seconds to mars song, I let my posture exude tension. Odette licked her lips, but didn't back down. She thought I wouldn't attack her; her status as eldest making her feel superior.
"And where is here, exactly." I said calmly. Odette shut off the car and leaned back in her seat. It was her usually tactile play, making herself seem relaxed and at ease, when she really was preparing to fight.
"Beacon Hills, California. And please don't make this any harder then it already is. You know the rules Faye, better than anyone. Welcome home baby." I rolled my eyes and took out my new phone, a black iPhone 4s.
"Home was New York. This is fucking Sun and Sea country." I snarled. Odette bared her perfect white teeth at me, eyes lighting up like kindling. It looked innocent enough, the brightness that now shone through the pale green of her irises, but to the educated eye, it looked exactly like what it was. A predator exuding her supposed authority. Her upper lip curled and a deep rumbling growl bubbled up from her diaphragm. I glared back.
"Do not sass me, Faye. You will not like the consequences." She warned. I took a shallow breath, allowing my blood to cool fractionally and distracted myself by calling to mind how many boxes I'd have to unpack once inside our new house. I honestly couldn't remember. Opening my slightly closed eyes, I shot a smug smile at Odette, our eyes once again locked over my six empty Red Bull cans.
"Please Odette." I said, keeping my voice calm and even. Taking my purse and phone I got out of the car and walked up the intricate and abstract stone walkway to the front porch. I heard the car door slam behind me as I put my boot clad foot onto the first stair leading to the front door. Odette was beside me in an instant, silent and swift as a cat; her Cleopatra black hair swishing back and forth in the breathless air. She walked up the stairs in front of me and over to a wooden porch swing. She then sat, pulling her legs up to her chest. With her tan skin and long legs, she'd blend right in here in Cali. That was probably why she choose it as our new location. She looked at me, then up at the house with its black windows.
"Key's under the mat there." She said. I stared at her for a second, then strode to the mat in question, the one right in front of the huge oak double doors. Written in white, a message read across the coarse fabric,
You again? I managed to giggle even in my supreme agitation. Snatching the key from under the left hand corner of the mat, I stood and fitted the tiny piece of metal ito the lock. It slid in easily and I threw the doors open, a bit of flair I'd never been able to shake clinging to my actions. Some habits never die. Odette was by my side again, I could feel her eyes on my face.
"I called ahead. All of the boxes are in their respective rooms, as well as furniture. All we need to do is unpack." She was all smiles now. I raised an eyebrow.
"Still mad, Miss Faye?" She teased. I rolled my eyes and stalked into the foyer, stowing the key in the back of my pocket of my jeans. Odette followed, running a hand through her immaculate black hair.
"Fine, Faye be mad and sulky. I do these things for your protection. We'd overstayed our welcome in New York. Any longer and we would have made ourselves conspicuous. You know that!" She was agitated now, I could hear the anger in her voice. Dropping my bag onto a table pushed against the wall, I rounded on Odette, waves of hair flying in a dizzying ark. In that instant the climate of the room changed completely.
"Odette, chill the fuck out." I snapped, putting both hands on my waist. Odette looked at me, stunned for a moment, with her large green eyes wide.
"I know why we have to move around! Don't talk to me like I'm a fucking baby!" I yelled. Lashing out with a flip flop clad foot, Odette shut the doors and the crashed closed with a resounding bang. Neither of us flinched. Odette looked stunned at my resounding tone which didn't surprise me. It wasn't until then that I noticed that my canines had elongated to the point that they were stabbing into my pouty lower lip. Odette's appearance was also changing; eyes glowing neon, fangs shooting to needle thin points and dimples deepening. The air that rushed through my parted lips tasted like dust, cardboard and a staleness that was common in new houses. Minus the fangs and eyes, the changes racking both our bodies would seem beautiful to the human eye. It was like the subtle changes a woman exudes when she was ovulating. A slight musky hint that makes her a tiny bit more attractive. Our whole bodies seemed to be giving off a deadly intoxicating scent. Like poison Ivy's pheromone dust.
Too bad we were so much worse than a red head in a green spandex suit. Oh so much worse. I growled at Odette as she tried to take a step toward me, both of us sinking into slight crouches. I could see my reflection in Odette's eyes, my own violet irises a violent neon, and fangs lowered, my head was cocked to the side, spilling my caramel blond waves in an attractive waterfall.
"Faye." Odette said, voice hesitant. "We're just hungry. That's why we're acting like this. Let's just go to bed, and tomorrow we can talk this over. You have classes, so you can scope for a new-" I shook my head and jerked out of my crouch. My fangs slid away and I could feel the carnal whispering in the back of my mind that accompanied the change silence itself. Odette straightened too, her eyes wary.
"You're right." I breathed, slightly quieter than usual. "Sorry. When do I have to be at school tomorrow?" Odette stared at me, still cautious. She had a right to be, I never just calmed myself down like that. I took a shallow breath and composed myself, letting my fists unclench and my back relax. Odette licked her lips,
"Eight. They sent your schedule in the mail, so you should be ok..." She trailed off, looking slightly abashed.
"I also signed you up to be an Athletic Assistant. It seems lacrosse is the sport to play here, so you'll be reporting to the coach right before classes today to get your times and such." I stared at Odette, who hastily tried to explain.
"I just thought, you know, you seem to like athletes so, if you were ingrained in the system-"I held up a hand, silencing her.
"That's, um, thank you." I said, feeling an uncomfortable tightness in my throat. Odette never did stuff like that; stuff to help me out when we changed locations. It was, sweet.
"That's a great idea, Odette. Thanks." Odette paused, then slowly, a beaming smile lit up her beautiful features. I smiled wanly back. With that, I turned on my heel and left the parlor, walking into the dark hallway.
Beacon Hills, California. You really couldn't get much further away from my previous home in New York and still be in the same continent. Which was both a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because I wouldn't be tempted to jump into the car and go back. A curse because I really wanted to do just that. Jump back into the car and drive back. Drive all the way to New York, to our old loft apartment. This house seemed alien and unfriendly. Maybe that was because it was dark and filled with boxes, but as I walked through the halls, looking into all the assorted rooms, I felt alone. An unusual feeling for me, but after so many moves I couldn't really feel excited about school and meeting new people. I didn't want to put down roots somewhere just so I could be ripped away in a year or so. And I couldn't just be unmoving and unsocial. I'd starve within a few days. At the foot of a flight of stairs, I sighed. It was time to go find my room and get to sleep. I couldn't stay awake for too much longer. Fatigue was starting to set in.
