This isn't particularly original of me, so don't think I'm trying to Blow Your Mind, but—I like to think that the Garden of Eden story was about God performing a sort of quality assurance test. He intended to make humans intelligent and curious, not only capable of learning but eager to learn. So he told them, "That's the Tree of Knowledge over there. I don't want you eating its fruit. If you do, you'll die." Then He sat back and waited to see which impulse was stronger, fear of consequences or the need to know. I like to think that when Eve said, "Let's test that hypothesis," God secretly cheered. Consider it a small piece of fan fiction: I just want a version of the story where all the characters are more likeable.
