Once Andrew tells me what happened to his living room, a memory comes to mind, so I tell him that I have to go and rush out before he can respond. I rush back to my house to talk to my mom about this thought, but she's not there. Asking Mark, I find out she's at the store getting groceries; horrible timing, if I do say so myself. Mark must be able to see my sense of urgency.
Mark: What's wrong, Beth?
Me: O-oh, it's... it's nothing.
Mark: Come on, Beth, I know you better than that. What's going on?
Me: Well... alright, I'll tell you, but this stays between us until I can figure out from Mom what to do.
Mark: Okay, that's not a problem.
Me: Okay... well, there's a legend that Mom told me about once. I didn't quite understand it then, but now, it makes a lot more sense.
Mark: Yeah? And what does this legend say?
Me: I don't remember exactly, but it basically says that one day when the seasons change, someone will enter our lives, and he will completely change everything we think we know about the world.
Mark: Um, Beth, I think you might be mistaken.
Me: You don't believe me? Come and see.I take him over to Andrew's place and ring the doorbell. When he answers, I introduce him to Mark and ask if we can come in. He accepts with no hesitation, and as we walk into the living room, my jaw drops. It looks like nothing had happened!!
Me: Andrew, how did you fix everything so easily and quickly??
Andrew: Um, what are you talking about?
Me: I'm talking about how your living room looked like a tornado hit it just a few minutes ago!
Andrew: Beth, I think you're mistaken. I mean, why would my living room look messy when I make sure to keep it tidy all the time?
Mark: Beth, I think you're exhausted, and you need sleep.
Me: I'm not crazy or exhausted; I know what I saw!Andrew: Beth, maybe Mark is right. Maybe you need to sleep for a little bit.
I burst into tears and run out, not even waiting for Mark. I run down to Starbucks and plop down outside, weeping.
Random person: Hello, are you alright?
I look up with tear-stained eyes to see a skinny dark-skinned guy standing there.
Me: Yeah, I'm fine.
Gene: No, you're not. My name is Gene, what's yours?
Me: I'm Beth.Gene: Well, Beth, why are you weeping?
Me: My new neighbor and one of my brothers are making it seem like I'm crazy and seeing things, but I don't know why.
Gene: Okay, tell me about it.Gene sits down next to me to listen.
Me: Well, my neighbor had come over to visit, and everything was going well when he suddenly lashed out verbally and left. I didn't understand what was going on, but I let him be for the night. The next day I went over there to check up on him, and his living room was trashed. Suddenly a thought came to mind about an old legend that my mom had told me about, so I rushed home. My mom wasn't there, so I thought my oldest brother would at least believe me. He and I went next door so I could show my brother what I was talking about, but the living room looked like nothing had happened to it; no trace of damage was detectable. They made it seem like I was crazy, so I rushed out and came here to calm myself down.
Gene looks at me with an odd look in his eyes.
Me: You don't believe me either, do you?
Gene: It's not that. What is your next door neighbor's first name?
Me: Andrew, why?His eyes go wide.
Gene: Oh no. It's happening.
Me: W-what's happening?
Gene: That legend you spoke of? I've read about it in my previous house I lived in before I moved back to Virginia.
Me: And where is this house? Who lives there now?
Gene: You do.My jaw drops; I can't believe what I'm hearing!
Me: But I read all the time, and I've never seen anything about this legend.
Gene: That's because I didn't put it where most people would look.
Me: But you think I can find it.
Gene: Well, you know about the legend. Only people that know about the legend can find the book.
Me: I'm so confused.
Gene: Ask your mother; she was also told.
Me: Okay, I'll ask about it when I go back up there.
Gene: I can take you, if you'd like.
Me: That would be great, thank you.He takes me back home, and as we stop in the driveway, I see someone that I thought was dead. I get out of the car and stare in shock at the person standing right there, smiling at me.
Me: DAD????
