Chapter 3

Reina

First day done, that wasn’t so bad. My AP chem class was actually very interesting. And my teacher said I could do labs independently without a partner, perfect. I’m not here to make friends; I just want to get my diploma so I can run off to college and never look back. I hold my binder close as I walk down the stairs the school is relatively quiet most kids have seven classes and I have six so I walk down the stairs towards the parking lot and easily find my black Jeep, that stands out amongst the more middles-class vehicles, a ‘just-because’ gift from my grandparents. I pull out of the parking lot and set out for the freeway happily humming along to Paramore. I get off and start driving down the side streets. It’s so open here lots of trees, fresh air, certainly one of my favorite places to live. I just pray she doesn’t come here and ruin it all, I think seven is a healthy number but once my report says eight schools in five years I’m going to be dubbed a problem child. I’m about to approach the hill that leads to Briar Lane when suddenly I feel my car slow down and finally stop. I look at the dash and much to my dismay the needle is on empty. Shit, how could I have not noticed that I had no gas, so many first-day jitters it must’ve escaped my mind. Well shit, now I’m stranded, no bother I can call my grandparents…no answer, awesome. Someone will come, yeah someone is going to drive by and offer to help the poor stranded girl, right…right?

I decide to step out of the car and try to wave down passing cars…now all I need are some passing cars, just kill me now please. I’ve left the small businesses and now I’m just surrounded by residential, and lord knows I’m not brave enough to go knocking on other peoples door, I’m not desperate…yet. Great, just great, I really don’t want to leave my brand-new car here and walk up that giant hill. I decide to give it ten more minutes, to pass the time I go back to the car and retrieve my drawing pad from my bag. I sit on the curb and run my hand down the pad feeling the paper than I take my pencil and trace random figures in the air above the paper and then I make the first stroke. Soon it becomes clear that I’m drawing a face. A male face. A male face with full lips and full eyebrows, and a well sculpted nose. Do I dare draw the eyes and admit to myself that I’m drawing the boy from my English class. Before I can decide I hear the hum and sputter of an engine, I look up and a dark blue pickup truck comes around the corner, I hurry to stand up and begin waving my hands; the car drives past and then slows before it comes to a stop. The engine shuts up and I send a silent prayer, the door opens and I’m met by a pair of sapphire eyes. Shit. What’s he doing here? My house isn’t even located within the district, that’s the beauty of it all! I never have to worry about seeing anyone from school…except of course the one hot guy in my English class, go figure. He closes the door and begins to approach me I take a few steps back until I feel the trunk of my jeep hit my back. God, this is not good what if he offers to help me or worse what if he offers to drive me home…the horror! The very attractive, well-built horror.

“Hey,” he said. “You need help? I saw you waving me down…” he stops abruptly seeming to stumble over his own words as he takes me in. “Wait…you…you’re that girl, from my English class, Reina, right?”

“Yeah.” I said as I crossed my arms under my chest and suddenly becoming very interested in my shoes. I make the mistake of looking up into his eyes and for a moment I’m paralyzed how could anything be so blue.

“So what’s wrong?”

“G-gas,” I stuttered. “I’m…out…I need gas.”

“I’m sure a bean burrito from Luis’s could fix that.” He said with a sly smile. I felt a blush creep into my cheeks, how immature. I scoffed, and turned to go sit in my car when he placed a hand on my shoulder and spun me around.

“Hey, I’m sorry, that was stupid. I could drive you to a gas station or if you want I can take you home.”

Shit! He asked to help me AND give me a ride home!

“Uhm, it’s okay, I think I’ll just wait for someone else.”

“Good luck with that, this is a shortcut that nobody knows about, I use it to get home from school so I can pass by all the traffic no one else is going to be driving through here.”

“I’ll just go knock on someone’s door,” I countered.

“No one will be home, they call this place Holiday Hill, the only people who live here are the retirees who have already paid off their homes so they use their social security to go on vacations.”

“Are you joking?”

“No, I’m not,” he chuckled. “And what is wrong with me?”

“A lot,” I said.

“Oh,” he said…wait, was he actually wounded by that?

“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.”

“No it’s fine, I’ll just go then.” He turned and started walking towards his car. Let him go Reina, I thought. It’s not worth it, no matter how could his butt looks in those Levi’s. It can only lead to problems later on. God, that’s a really nice butt though! Don’t do it Reina, you are stronger than that.

“Wait!” I cried out.

Idiot!

I ran up to meet him, and his eyes lit up but then smoldered as he leaned up against his car and popped up his collar. An air of swagger enveloping and mixing with his arrogance,

“I knew you couldn’t resist me.”

I glared up at him then leaned over I think he thought I was going to kiss him, he closed his eyes and leaned forward. That was when I moved back a couple steps. He lost his equilibrium and began to fall, and then he caught himself gasping from the shock. I chuckled as I walked over and hopped in the passenger seat. I looked up and saw the guy going through my car. What the fuck? He retrieved my bag and my cardigan and came back to the car.

“Here, I figure you’ll need these later on.”

“Thanks.” I was completely oblivious to the fact that the only thing I grabbed was my drawing pad.

“Asher,” he said, as he held out his hand.

“What?” I asked confused, as I stared at the thing.

“My name, my name is Asher.” I took it and shook it.

“Reina,” I whispered

“Yeah, I know but thank you for clearing up any rumors,” He said with a smile. “It’s a very beautiful name, by the way,” He said slowly, a certain warmth lingering on his words. And for some reason I found myself smiling, forgetting any moment but this.

“Thank you,” I said equally as slowly. He smiled and I smiled back. And for a moment I had hope, I saw myself happy, at peace, vibrant, loved, and always in the company of a pair of beautiful, steel-like, sapphire eyes.
