8:29pm

"Another chance for Clara to get alcohol poisoning?" I voice aloud while straightening my brown hair.

"Relax," Natalie dismisses with a wave of her hand. "This girl's like a machine."

The truth is, I knew Clara could handle herself at a party, I was just looking for other reasons that'd excuse me from going. Seeing Jeff again after I absolutely humiliated myself last night? Yeah, thanks for that, David. I don't think I can muster up the courage to face him again.

"Maybe I shouldn't go, I've got things to do early in the morning." I smooth through a lie, avoiding eye contact with the two girls who can read me like a book.

"Oh, yeah?" Clara speaks up from Natalie's vanity mirror. "What kind of things?" She challenges.

Fuck. "Oh you know," I begin, voice slightly wavering. "Running...and whatnot."

"Since when do you run?" Natalie scoffs at my attempt at hiding the truth and I give her a genuinely hurt look.

"Excuse me, why does everyone seem to forget that I did track in high school?" I defend myself, setting the straightener aside to cross my arms defensively.

"Yeah," Clara laughs. "For one year. Then you fainted at a meet, remember?"

"Okay, okay," I dismiss, rolling my eyes at their shockingly good memories. "But in all seriousness—"

"Jeff won't care! He's a nice guy!" Natalie cuts me off, reading the exact thoughts going through my mind.

"He probably thinks I'm constantly on crack, I shot him with a gun." I answer back to her, giving her a stern look that says it all.

"Paintball gun, Lily. You're so dramatic." Clara sighs, continuing her makeup routine.

I roll my eyes and let out a groan as I turn back around and continue getting ready. Maybe Natalie's right, maybe he is a nice guy?
