{Chapter 5}
Waking up,
and realising none of the romantic crap in books could ever happen to you.
Charlie
Losing track of time sucks. Forgetting your pencil case at home sucks even more. There'll at least be a day in a year when I'll forget my pencil case.
And I'm pretty sure you know how uncomfortable it is. You'll have to ask for everything. The thing I'm most frustrated with is the fact that there was going to be a quiz for History and that meant disturbing the silence, which also meant being the annoying one in class.
Fortunately, Nathan saved me. Well, he saved me after lunch that is.
During the period of our relationship, I've noticed how forgetful he is. It's like he always seems to remember the unimportant stuff first and it's always the important things that he forgets the most.
Like, the last time we went on vacation together, he had forgotten to bring his towel. Thank god we stayed at a cabin that provided us towels or else he'd have to share towels with me. He made a video about it and it became somewhat popular. (surprisingly)
Lyn had decided to come over today and it wasn't easy since Tuesdays were the only days Nathan was free.
While I waited for Evelyn, I played on my phone whilst lounging on the couch. Nathan was descending down the stairs and before I could process what was happening, he started moping on me.
"Uh-wait, wha- Nate, get off- you're heavy,"
He grunts into my stomach and I laugh as it vibrates and tickles against me. He chins up against my skin and stares at me from across. "That's a nice double chin you got there," He smirked. I rolled my eyes playfully at him.
"Naaate, you didn't have to call me out like that..." I pouted.
He laughed and scooched closer towards my face, close enough to reach my neck. I watched him with big eyes, staring into his captivating green ones. He finally rested his head against my shoulder, pressing soft kisses against my neck. "I'm not calling you out..."
He stops and stares at me with a gaze I wasn't able to decipher. "...I'm just claiming what is mine,"
"And what exactly is yours?"
He kisses my chin. "This. This double chin's mine."
I laughed, "Shit. That tickles."
His warm breath fanned against my skin, teasing me of a ghosted kiss. "I was thinking..." Nathan began. I sat up and somehow fell on top of his chest.
"Do you wanna find a better place?" I watched as he took in my hand, entangling it into the other and I wondered how we fit so well, yet seem so apart through a stranger's eyes.
And we stayed that way until there were knocks on the door. I groaned into his chest before stretching and getting off him, jogging to the door in a rushing manner.
Embracing the condition Lyn was in, I quickly invited her in and she went ahead and sat on the couch. She looked stubbornly messy and that was abnormal for her considering how neat she was.
That basically rounded her up. Evelyn was in fact just another ball of neatness with a pinch of procrastination. "What's wrong, Evvie."
She stared disapprovingly at me before nodding over to Nathan, crossing her arms in a lady boss manner. "Does he need to be here?"
Okay, she's mad.
Nathan scoffed, "Yes, I fucking live here. What's gotten your hair on all ends?"
I wanted, no, I needed to signal to Nathan how bad it was to fuck with Lyn when she was angry but even Nathan had a hard time controlling his anger and that literally meant a clash of active volcanoes.
So, I did something that could do the least at calming down one of them and went ahead to persuade Nathan.
"Nate, Ev's having a hard time, okay? Maybe... we could do something special for tonight if you'd just let me have a simple talk with her." I reasoned.
"She needs to learn to keep her fucking glares to herself. And, seriously? Bribing me with sex? This isn't 2017, Charlie, don't ever bribe me with your body again. I'll back off this one time just because of how ticked off she looked. But there'll be no second chances, Charlie." He ranted as I pushed him up the stairs.
I glanced back at Lyn and found her with her hands hiding her dishevelled face. "Okay. Spill."
"I'm fucked, Charlie. So fucking fucked. Nothing makes sense, ugh." She goes on.
"That doesn't really explain what happened, Evvie," I tell her.
"I know. I don't know. My mom was talking to Summer's mom about me. And her."
That wasn't good. Summer's mom wasn't exactly a lighthearted individual. She's undeniably a very unfiltered person. "What happened?" I coax her to move on. She bit her lip. Evelyn liked to do that. Mama used to scold me because I used to bite my lip a lot up to the point it would bleed and bruise disgustingly. I had really bad lips back then.
"Summer... knew about... my grades. She also knew how much I hated her. All these years, I've tried to hide them from my mom! And now she knows about it too. She's sending me to boarding school, Charlie... I don't wanna go to boarding school," She was crying now.
I was bad at making people feel better. So I didn't exactly—couldn't exactly sow any guilt in my heart. I kind of used a power move because I could never really achieve any comforting dialogues to send to her heart for her to be inspired by. I was never that guy. I was a hugger. So I hugged her.
Hugging initially means comfort in a way and Evvie cried harder into my chest. She was a silent crier which made the situation a lot gloomy.
I don't think her mom was ever actually worried about her grades but she did take impressions highly. And with a (possibly) rude approach coming from this stranger she's never met, she'd be disappointed.
Then something caught on to me. "Evvie... was that why you were with Summer the other day?"
"When?" She faced me, pursing her lips sourly at the situation.
"During that day, y'know, that time during morning registration at the canteen when I went to find you?"
She groans, "Hrghh, yeah, no. We were just talking. I just found out today."
"What were you—" then a crash happened.
"NATHAN WHAT IS GOING ON UP THERE?" I shouted at him.
Silence.
"Babe?" I pursed my lips.
