It's strange to recall that couples once had a life outside of each other. This means they once had their own thoughts, feelings and ideas. Before they became conjoined, they kept their hearts chained inside of their chest rather than wearing it on their sleeves. Love can be beautiful, but also disastrous. It requires one to fully trust and depend on the other in times of need. Reaching that level of vulnerability is something they never believed they'd accomplish before - something they didn't necessarily need before. Just so, a life without a lover can be ordinary. This was how she viewed it anyhow. Not always lonely, perhaps, but as though it were missing something. Part of her had always longed for a companion who she could grow and simply enjoy life with. The other side of her, however, refuted that thought. To give up her independence was something she feared. She solely relied on herself during the most challenging times. No one understood her the way she understood and accepted herself.
There were corners of her mind she couldn't comprehend - fragments of herself that she couldn't face. She had a sensitivity she refused to proclaim aloud. Emotions that weren't consisting of happiness or confidence were considered taboo. Weakness was what she presumed sadness was. There was no reason for it to overwhelm her or for her brain to dwell upon. That mindset didn't halt the voices from whispering in her ear at every second she was caught unaware. They haunted her just as life haunted her.
He was clingy and playful all at once. Being alone was insufferable for him. He was only someone when he had someone. Allowing others to define his worth was foolish, but an unshakable habit. He held no knowledge about himself or of life if one wasn't by his side, taking his calloused hand. He required to be lead in a certain direction that they chose to take him rather than following his own path. He hid behind an image and collected an interesting reputation in the meanwhile, searching out his next lover.
Yet, privily, he was also stubborn and demanding - quite the opposite of what his first impression shown signs of. He expected others to bend to his manipulative will. Selfish, greedy and self-centered, he often cast himself as the victim. He could morally do no wrong. This persona was both his disease and his downfall. He was rushing and pressuring others until they were forced to run. Intimidation was key, though he feigned charming behavior to reel them in.
It was no surprise when they met that she wasn't expecting to fall quite as hard. She felt as though she had known this stranger all her life. Naturally, everything started falling together. All the time in the world with him wasn't enough. He was perfect to and for her. He was constantly complimenting and staring at her out of admiration. Due to his sly conduct, she allowed herself to transform into someone she didn't even recognize.
He couldn't deny that there was chemistry. Every moment was magical. He couldn't quite grasp the way in which she made him feel. Her laughs were music to his ears. She was shy, but he found that endearing. With everything he said or done, she was consistently encouraging him. Perhaps he had something to shelter and perhaps he shrouded himself in captivating mystery - just enough to continuously draw her in.
There was a newfound confidence in her that she wouldn't have even yearned to achieve. The entire world was at her fingertips, just nestling into her grasp. Smiles were more frequent as she fell in to the pattern of distracting her betraying thoughts with images of him and conversations they shared. She could sense a change occurring, but easily deemed it as positive. Though jealousy she hadn't experienced before overtook her when they couldn't be together. Where did he go when she wasn't around and who did he speak to? Did he think of her as much as she thought about him?
After months had passed, his guilt trips were only getting started. Anyone she spoke to, he accused her of cheating on him with them. He isolated her from even her family and closest friends. She was no longer as connected with her co-workers. Any time a soft "no" would escape her lips, she almost instantly regretted it. He made her feel as though she were some sort of monster. He broke her trust and was nearly a stranger to her afterwards.
With more and more time that brought them together, they were also being tore apart. Now every time they touched, instead of blossoms and butterflies, their skin commenced decaying. This was a representation of how toxic being in love can be. It was dangerous that they halted in ignoring the red flags and kept themselves away from that fantasy world where pain did not exist. Once the flesh unfolded, fading away to reveal how fragile they are, they developed an unhealthy desire for the visual damage they created. Causing the skin decay was no longer enough. They now hungered for more.
It was then that they stooped down to taking each other's skin between their teeth, no longer holding back their brash words or relentless infuriation. Both of them were getting too comfortable with hurting each other. Words were released that they wouldn't even hear from their worst enemy. Her remarks weren't as malicious or snide, but they were no longer kind and patient nonetheless. Attitude crept in and replaced her sweet depiction. He did not take her feelings into account before he lashed into her. As far as he was concerned, this was what she deserved.
Blood pooled out from under where their flesh had landed, tainting the ground that was once stable beneath their feet. She once had steady footing with him boosting her out of her personal rut. His former self was lost, spilling out in bits and pieces. Their hearts started to shatter and rip out chunks of their appendages, modifying them into a broken shell. Their bones were exposed from where their complexion was amiss. The pieces of their blood-stained flesh were crawling with worms and maggots - said filthy creatures were their fleeting trust, but also their lacking nostalgia of how they once were. All happiness was eroded.
The betrayal and lies that sent them further apart were bullets spiraling into their guts, exploding upon impact. She hid her hobbies from him until they were out in the open. He exaggerated the way he spoke about her to his female friends until she noticed the true messages. She betrayed him in closing herself off from him and he betrayed her in more abusive ways. His love had transfigured into lust as his fantasies were only belittling her. Her love had faltered to where she was more stuck than choosing to be with him. They were both in the wrong, so how could either of them feel as though they were right?
Just as their patience was thinning for one another before beckoning for an outburst, their eyes were popping out of their heads and merely hanging on by the threads. They were absolutely revolting. Appearance and personality-wise, they couldn't remember why they fell for one another. He claimed to still love her, but his actions spoke louder than his lies. No one could say such awful things to their lover, nor could they refuse to support them when they needed it the most. She was showing a softer, more defeated side of her that neither of them wanted. Her tears weren't salty, they were sharp and venomous, poisoning the surface.
Slowly, they were thrusting knives into each other's backs. It was no longer a challenge for them to turn on one another. She still reached for his free hand, despite the unbearable pain coursing throughout her entire being as the dagger was nearly glued into her back. The touch was proving to be a burning sensation when it was once comforting. Her being the weakest since he had drained every last ounce of strength out of her, it was her skin that started the deteriorating process first. As the skeleton frame of her was more evident, his dermis mimicked the same destructive pattern. Losing their vital organs and becoming one with the dead, the two of them fell to the ground. Daisies were pushed upwards between their bodies; love was once beautiful afore it turned out deadly.
