The Orphanage

Sammy and I have been living here most of our lives. This orphanage isn't the best place to be. Sammy is okay, they are okay with her. Me on the other hand, I don't know if they could hurt me more.

I'm 13 and have been here since I was 7, Sammy has been here ever since just after she was born. Sammy never met our mother, she only knew our mother for half a year before she died of cancer, making Sammy 6.

I had read a note a the day I turned thirteen, that revealed a little about who my father was. I was extremely surprised, and a little disbelief, when I read that Bruce Banner is me and Sammy's father.

Apparently they first met and conceived me but he left and never knew about me.

When he came back 6 years later I had been with grandma, who passed away shortly after that. My stuff had been hidden. She told him not to go in that room and he didn't. Sammy was conceived and he had to leave on a mission.

He never even knew a thing about us.

I've always taken care of Sammy, never let her out of my sight. I couldn't lose the only family I have left, at least that knows me.

I wake up at my normal time. I throw some of my, ragged and worn, clothes.

I gently shake Sammy awake, since we share a small room in the attic.

She gets up and throws on some clothing. Her clothing is newer and nicer as any money I get goes to getting her nicer things, such as decent clothing and shoes.

She also has a necklace which is probably the nicest thing she owns.

The necklace is an old fox that mother put around Sammy's neck before she died. Sammy rarely takes it off.

I grab everything and put it in my book bag

I grab everything and put it in my book bag. The nicest thing I own is a cheap $13 watch I bought for myself.

I grab my bookbag and get Sammy ready.

We quickly head outside. Mrs. Neal, the caretaker, catches me before I make it out the door.

I push Sammy forward so she gets outside.

She'll hide behind something and wait until I come out.

Mrs. Neal slapped me, once, twice, and a third time.

"Don't you leave without saying you could." She yells in my face. Then she lets me go and yells at me to leave.

I get outside and see a man. It is obvious he notices the bright red marks, and already forming bruise, apparent across my cheek.

"Sammy." I say.

She walks out from behind the man and runs up to me.

I smile at the man. "Thank you." I say.

I hear the door rattle and I already know what is going to happen.

I quickly kneel down in front of Sammy. She has tears in her eyes.
