Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak are each others first love, and it's really their first. No, Not their first serious relationship but their first relationship ever.
Dean and Castiel were friends for a long time before they got together. When they were 6 dean came over to Cas' house every Friday since they were 2 years old. Their moms were friends so they spent a lot of time together at a young age and the friendship continued even when their mom's stopped forcing them to spend time together.
Even though at the age of 8 and they were no longer forced to be together, they stuck together anyway. They spent their days playing video games and war in the backyard and everything every little boy does, but they were different because they did it all together.
They stuck together through thick and thin, Cas was there for dean when his father died and dean was there for Cas in turn when his mother died as well. They made each other smile when they were sad and shewed bullies away from one another and never left the other one behind.
It was no surprise that when they got older it developed into something more.

On the last day of 6th grade was when it happened. Ever since they turned 12 it started change, their friendship just wasn't the same though neither boy knew why.
Castiel thought that the new nervous and awkward silences that filled their conversations was a sign they needed to spend more time apart, but dean had figured it all out. Dean realized his feelings for what they were, for months he struggled and was in denial; taking girls out to the movies to try and change his own mind, by doing so he earned himself the label as a jerk from his fellow female students.
But dean didn't mean them harm; he was just trying to protect himself. For about a year then he has started noticing that he doesn't feel the same way about girls the way the other boys do, and frankly it scared him. There's no way he can be gay, he's not homophobic but he certainly can't be gay could he?
After months of trying to force himself to have crushes on girls he couldn't lie to himself anymore, he may have owned up to his attraction to the same gender but that doesn't mean it ever stopped scaring him. Despite the fact he knew that his family was fine with homosexuality he couldn't bear thinking about seeing the disappointment his moms eyes as he tell her he could never give her grandchildren.
Over the course of that year dean started getting nervous around his best friend and he finally owned up to the fact that he had a crush on him, but it depressed him because he knew that Cas had a crush on a girl named Jessica and that he would never like him back.
But what dean didn't know was that Castiel wasn't quite sure on his sexuality yet like dean was. So when the mood between the two changed it scared him, he read it the wrong way and thought this meant they should stop being best friend's.
This killed dean, he thought he scared off his best friend with something he couldn't control and now they only ever talked in class and stopped playing videogames after school like they used to. Dean never did stop liking Castiel though.
Dean was sure this was it, this summer he would never hear from Castiel and things would never be the same. But knowing that if he didn't do this it would end up the same anyways so what did he have to lose.
On the last day of 6th grade dean walked up to Cas with shaky hands, 'now or never right?' He though before speaking up. The bell had yet to ring and their day wasn't over yet. The two boys were sitting together at lunch alone like they used to before.
