Sally greeted Mia with an enthusiastic kiss. "Hey, girlfriend. Missed you." She tasted like peaches and brought with her the scent of fresh fruits.
"Missed you too. Nice dress." Mia stepped aside, letting Sally rush by. "Hi Kirstin. Come on in."
"Mia." Sally's lover planted a firm kiss on Mia's cheek. Then she hurried inside, balancing their pizzas, leaving a gobsmacked Mia standing in the hallway.
"What has Sally done to you?" Mia shut her apartment's door and followed after Kirstin. No point trying to get anything out of their girlfriend while she was busy bustling about, checking the rooms for anything that needed cleaning. She ignored the muffled sounds of rattling drawers and muttered curses. Same old every time.
"Nothing, really." Kirstin tried to sound nonchalant as looked through the boxes for her pizza, but her blush betrayed her. "It's just—after watching Seitz's vid together and what Sally and I did in your bed, um. It just felt silly holding onto my, my—"
"Grudge? Jealousy? Burning envy?" Mia couldn't help needling Kirstin.
"Let's call it 'reservations'." Kirstin had finally found the pizza she wanted. "And for the record, I'm still not all convinced of this—arrangement. What if you move? What if I move? Would Sally follow either of us? What about the other one? What if—ha. But then, it's all hypothetical, isn't it? I'm not risking losing Sally over problems that might never happen."
They looked at each other, aware of the seriousness of the moment. Of a real problem, if not solved, then at least mitigated, or perhaps postponed. "Thanks. It does mean a lot to me."
"Not as much as it means to Sally." Kirstin lowered her voice. In her girlfriend's world everyone needed to get along at all times. It could be quite exhausting.
Mia laughed, understanding Kirstin's issue well enough.
"Stop gossiping about me," Sally demanded, for the moment done nosing through Mia's apartment. Besides, it was a bad idea to leave her girlfriends to themselves for too long without her supervision. Who knew what stories they shared with each other?
A downside to their newfound friendship Sally hadn't fully considered before. Whatever one of them might complain out now might easily become a complaint of the other as well—and if decisions had to be made, there was a very real possibility of being outvoted two to one now. Oh, the sacrifices she made for her silly lovers!
"How's your challenges going?" A distraction seemed like a good idea.
Kirstin and Mia looked at each other. Far too knowingly. Then they smirked. Another time.
"The challenges are going okay. I already won the first." Mia decided to indulge Sally.
"That was the get-someone's-paws-on-your-body one, right?" Kirstin handed out the other pizzas.
"I still think you should have let me do it." Sally pouted.
"That'd have been too easy." Kirstin commented, to the others' surprise. "What? Of course Mia would want to impress her Chancellor Seitz. It's just common sense. If you are going to do this, do it right!"
Mia nodded, smiling. "And it was more fun like this. Kimberley is nice."
Sally narrowed her eyes. "So that's who got her dirty hands on my girlfriend? Who is it? Do I know her? Did you do anything else?"
"Relax! I just met her at the Kitty Parlor. We did the challenge; that's all." And exchanged phone numbers. Just in case. For future challenges. Maybe. But Sally didn't need to know that.
