The Realm of Fantasy is so rich and intricate that we become so absorbed in the worlds of these stories, forgetting about the reality of the known world.
Why do we believe in Daenerys and her dragons, instead of laughing at thought? How can we believe in the existence of Hogwarts and the things which occur in the world created by J.K Rowling?
What is so captivating about the world of fantasy? What kind of spell have these writers cast over us?
The key is a well developed world. These worlds are usually so far removed from reality... they stand alone. The main point is they stand and they stand strong! We find ourselves not only captivated by characters but the world too.
We want to know the history of the world, languages, geography, the creatures, mythology, religions etc. Some writers do it so well that we find ourselves absorbed by a world within a new world.
These little tidbits breathe life into the pages we are reading! Have you ever heard the saying 'We are shaped by our environment'? Have you guessed where we are going with this? Characters are shaped by their environment too! A writer might not come out and say so, but the world may shape a character's motives or lack thereof.
How does a writer do that? A good writer establishes the laws of the world and the reader, having understood what is possible and not possible in that world, is able to connect with not just the character but the world itself. These little details also help to prevent gaps in the plot. E.g Would we all think Kryptonians were flying around in their home planet because Superman did so on earth?
Most likely. However, his abilities are attributed to the differences between Earth's gravity and that of Krypton, and the different radiation of the stars in Krypton and our sun.
World building is an essential part of any story. Stick around as our gatekeepers help you navigate your way into writing an incredible world.
