Number of Death

Chapter one
I don’t know if it was just the fact that my father just died or if it was because we were moving. I’m just so down. But my father just died. How can I not be? My father and I weren’t close. At all. He left my mom and I when I was a toddler still in diapers. And to make matters worse my mom was pregnant with my little brother Robert. And she was about to pop. Her and my father were high school sweet hearts and since he left I was stuck being the “Mom”. She got so depressed after he left, that all she did was watch re-runs of the bachelor and ate nothing but ice cream. There was even a time when she went into deep depression and kept re-painting the living room. The same color and just kept painting. I was to little to understand what was happening and why she was crying all the time. I was too young. What could I do?
“Lilly! Time to get ready for school.” I hear my mom calling. I’m a sophomore now at Tilly High School and I am so not ready. My mom is a writer so we are always moving to different cities, states and a couple times even countries just so she can find things to write about. This is the fourth High School I’ve been to since freshman year. It gets stressful and takes a lot of time to get used to. Sometimes we just live out of the packing boxes. Theres never any time to actually un-pack. Bobby is going to be starting 2nd grade this year at Tilly Elementary. He isn’t much of an outgoing person as I am. He likes to be very independent. As soon as I see someone I have to start a conversation. That’s why my mom calls me “The Conversation Starter”.
The bus was pulling up to our street now and I had to get Bobby on the bus. Mom was already “at work”. She just sits in her study writing all day. It is rarely ever she gets anything done. I think she only made this her career so she didn’t have to raise Bobby and therefore I’m the only one left to.
On Bobby’s second birthday dad showed up. But he was only visiting. Dad picked up Bobby and he screamed. Bobby never met dad and didn’t know who he was. We taught him to scream when a stranger picked him up. Which happened fairly often since he didn't remember people. Mom saw the resemblance between the two and ran to the Fun House bathroom crying. Mom and Dad made a huge scene right in the middle of the Fun House entrance. It wasn't long before we were kicked out for good.
As Bobby and I were walking down the driveway to his bus stop we were stopped mid-way. A guy ran past us with all black clothes, dark gloves covering his hands and a mask over his face. The only skin you were to see was his eyes and mouth. He had a knife in his right hand with fresh red blood dripping from the sharply pointed end. He yelled “Howdy!” and kept running. I couldn’t dare let Bobby out of my sight now. What if this guy was a murderer or a rapist or simply just a guy, carrying around a knife with blood on it. Trying to look secret. Then came another thought. It is only three days before Halloween so maybe around here they get things started up early. I decided to go with that thought. I gave Bobby a kiss and a hug and got him on the bus.
